Are Cubs Fans Racist?

July 13, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Another racist t-shirt has popped up outside Wrigley Field, which leads to the question: Are Cubs fans racist? Or is it just the street vendors outside Wrigley? Or maybe the t-shirt makers? This newest version shows the outline of a man cutting grass and says "Pujols mows my lawn." Another one says "Zambrano mows my lawn," which is odd to see outside Wrigley; vendors, I suppose, were hoping to sell it to Cardinals fans this past weekend. There's also one targeting White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen that says "Ozzie mows Wrigley Field."That one first hit the streets last month, and while some reporters questioned whether it was racist, Ozzie ...

Report: Chicago Cubs Show Interest in BJ Ryan

July 13, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

A number of media outlets, including the Chicago Tribune, have reported over the weekend that the Chicago Cubs are interested in adding former Toronto Blue Jays' reliever BJ Ryan. Ryan, who clears waivers on Monday, will become a free agent after being released by Toronto. He was supposed to make $15 million this year. The investment the Cubs would need to make in the oft-injured reliever would be minimal, and they would have the option of sending Ryan to the minors for a time, just until he was ready to compete at a major league level. The fact that the Cubs would have interest in ...

Words From The Heart: Why I Love The Loveable Losers

July 13, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Cubs cause a lot of pain. Unless you're a true Cubs fan, you have no idea. 101 years is a long time to wait for a championship. A lot of people ask me, "Why do you invest so much into a team that produces so little?" That is a great question. I finally sat down to think of why. Here are the reasons: Because we play two. Because we had Ernie, Ronny, Billy, Fergie, and Phil all on one team. Because we experienced the magical summer of 1969. Because we call 1969 magical even though we choked in August. Because we experienced the 1998 home run ...

Chicago Cubs Find New Left Fielder…in Bullpen!

July 13, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

On Sunday night, in front a national television audience, the creative genius Chicago Cubs' fans have been begging Lou Piniella to employ finally showed up. If you read the play-by-play for the ninth inning, there is a sequence that will undoubtedly have you scratching your head. Sean Marshall relieves Angel Guzman. OK, nothing major there. Aaron Heilman relieves Marshall; Marshall to left field. What? It's bad enough Heilman's pitching, but Marshall in left field? One batter, a strike out, later, Marshall moves back to the mound and Reed Johnson enters the game to play left. Because the Cubs don't have a left handed pitcher anywhere ...

Grading the Chicago Cubs at the Break

July 12, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

As the Cubs finish the first half of the season (figuratively) with a Sunday double header against the Cardinals, it's time for fans to pause, take a deep breath and look forward. Part of that pause is looking at where the team has been, though. Though the Cubs have played more than half of their games, the All Star Break is the time to evaluate the team, the division, and the season. How have the veterans done so far? What kids have contributed? What options are there for changes? Are changes needed? Let's take a look at the Cubs of 2009, and how ...

Don’t Mess with Zambrano

July 12, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Filed:July 12th, 2009 Chicago Cub Carlos Zambrano (Cubbie Nation/file photo) He sings. He dances. He tells jokes. He beats catchers with his bare hands. Oh, and he pitches pretty well, too, and knows to hit. The latter two were on display Sunday, as Zambrano carried the Cubs to a 7-3 win over the Cardinals in Game 1 of their day/night doubleheader. Micah Hoffpauir, subbing for Derrek  Lee, actually started things with a three-run homer in the first off of Cardinals start Kyle Lohse. Lohse had the right idea, but wrong execution when he threw a breaking ball inside to Hoffpauir, normally a pitch ...

Alfonso Soriano: A New Sixth Hitter?

July 12, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Is Alfonso Soriano in the sixth hole the answer the Cubs have been looking for to pull Soriano out of his slump? I say yes. When Soriano was moved to the sixth hole, he was struggling badly. He was striking out and was lucky if he could put a ball in play. Since the move, Soriano is batting .333 (7-21). In the St. Louis series, Soriano is hitting .333 with one RBI and two walks. A big improvement over earlier in the season. I know this is early to judge whether Soriano in the six hole is working well. I think it is ...

Should Jake Fox Get Time As The Chicago Cubs’ Starting Catcher?

July 12, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

When Chicago Cubs catcher Geovanny Soto went down with a left oblique strain after Monday's game against the Atlanta Braves, I assumed that this would be the perfect opportunity for rookie standout Jake Fox to find his way back into the lineup. But I was wrong. Instead of going with the hot hitting Fox, Lou Pinella decided to insert backup catcher Koyie Hill. Hill has hit poorly, much like the rest of the Cubs lineup. But Hill is known as a good defensive catcher and bottom of the lineup hitter. So why has Lou decided to insert Hill over Fox into a lineup that ...

The Chicago Cubs’ 20 Worst Transactions Since 1990

July 11, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

As a Cubs, fan it was a lot of fun putting together my list of The Chicago Cubs 20 Best Transactions Since 1990. However, it is only fair that I follow that up with the 20 Worst. While none of these moves hold a candle to the Aramis Ramirez trade in terms of significance, there have nonetheless been some truly awful decisions made in the recent history of the franchise. The biggest surprise here for many will be number three on this list, as I'm not sure aa whole lot of people know about that one. You will see what I mean. So ...

How, and Where, The Cubs Could Trade Alfonso Soriano

July 11, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Chicago Cubs looked like a steaming pile of hot garbage on Friday in an 8-3 loss to division leading St. Louis Cardinals in the first game of a crucial four-game series before the All Star Break. Whether it's been Rich Harden's inability to gets outs past the second inning, Ryan Dempster's high jumping ability or Geovany Soto's new love handle contusion, the Cubs are giving off the vibes of a team completely out of it in the National League Central. The funny thing is, just a week ago the Cubs won a big series against the Milwaukee Brewers and looked like ...
