Derrek Lee Vs. Andrian Gonzalez: Who Deserves It More?

July 10, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The 2009 NL All-Star team is pretty stacked. Just one person is missing: Derrek Lee. The first basemen for the National League include Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder, and Adrian Gonzalez. Don't get me wrong. All these guys are awesome. Especially Albert Pujols. But I think Derrek Lee deserves it, especially over Andrian Gonzalez. Derrek Lee is batting .279 with 16 home runs and 53 RBI. More RBI then Adrian Gonzalez (52). His .279 batting average is higher than Adrian Gonzalez's (.256). All three hitters have more home runs then Lee, but since when is home runs the deciding factor in who makes the all-star team? Advantage: ...

A Case For The Rookie of The Year: Randy Wells

July 9, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The 26-year-old stud, Randy Wells, is definitely someone in the running for the Rookie of the Year. He has been nothing short of dominant this year for the Cubs. Wells, with his second team, has looked absolutely amazing this year for the Cubs. Wells, who has been lacking run support, is 4-3 with a 2.48 ERA. His record doesn't reflect how well he has pitched for the Cubs. No pitchers in the NL are anywhere near Randy Wells. Compare the following pitchers to Wells's stats. Kenshin Kawakami, 34, is 5-6 with a 4.26 ERA for the Atlanta Braves. Tommy Hanson is the only one ...

Braves-Cubs: Can We Go Find a Bat Now?

July 9, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Admit it: It has been a rough week watching the Cubs. For one day—Monday—all seemed to be right with the world. Everyone was healthy. The team played well and won. The Tribune era appeared to quickly be ending, and for the first time in months, at least I felt like the team might put it together enough to make a run. No, not the 97 wins type of run, but more like the 85 wins and back into the playoffs sort of thing. That is starting to seem more and more like what the eventual National League Central champion will look ...

Let’s Make a Deal: The Chicago Cubs’ 20 Best Transactions Since 1990

July 9, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

I'll give the Cubs one thing, they are not afraid to pull the trigger on a big trade or sign a big name player, if they think it will help the team. With the recent flop signing of Milton Bradley and seemingly unwise trade of Mark DeRosa, I decided to look back at some of the moves that went right dating back to 1990. Before we begin with the list, I just want to say thank you to the Pittsburgh Pirates, as three of your bonehead trades managed to make this list, two of them even cracked the top five. As you can ...

Chicago Cubs-St. Louis Cardinals: This Could Get Ugly

July 9, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

With the Cardinals coming to town this weekend, who knows what to expect. This series is always a fun one. What a way to send both teams to the all star break. Both teams are getting set for a four game series that will be played in three days with first place up for grabs. Game One Game one is set for Saturday (7/11) at 1:20pm CT. Set to start for the Cubs is Rich Harden (5-5 5.35 ERA) and for the Cardinals is Brad Thompson (2-5 4.92 ERA). Pitching Advantage has to go to the Cubs in game one. Yes, Harden hasn't been very ...

Chicago Cubs: Are The Wheels Coming Off?

July 9, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Things were starting to look up for the Chicago Cubs. They took three out of four games from the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend and appeared to be turning the corner offensively. As Aramis Ramirez, Reed Johnson and Angel Guzman came back from their sorted injuries, the Cubs seemed to be in decent shape, just a few games behind the division-leading Cardinals. And then the Cubs won on Sunday. The bench was excited by the series victory as the team stormed the field. Some took the stairs to leave the dugout. Ryan Dempster decided to hop the fence. It got worse on Wednesday as ...

B.J. Ryan: A Future Chicago Cub?

July 9, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

With the Blue Jays' release of the two-time All-Star closer, the question looms... Where will B.J. Ryan end up? Ryan has struggled a bit this year, but he will definitely be a steal for whoever picks him up. Look to the stats. He has had over 30 saves three times in his career. He has a career 3.37 ERA and 112 saves. Ryan has battled a left shoulder injury this year and definitely struggled for the Jays. He is 1-1 with a 6.53 ERA and only two saves in 20 2/3 innings. The Jays are reportedly say that they will eat the rest of ...

Chicago Cubs: Curse of the Gatorade Dispenser?

July 8, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Fans of any other team would have surely have blown a gasket, be stunned in utter disbelief or curse their luck if they had heard that one of their best pitchers fractured his toe jumping over the dugout railing while celebrating a victory. But I didn't even flinch. No double take, no ghastly expression of shock, no emotion whatsoever. Why the utter disregard, you ask? Well, as a longtime Cubs fan, you get used to these kind of things. It's hard to explain. This state is only something you acquire through years of following the Cubs every day. Cubs fans don't share the woe-is-me/fear ...

Kevin Hart Set for Major League Debut as a Starter: Who is Kevin Hart?

July 8, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Unlike football and basketball players, unless you are drafted in the first round, not many people will know your name. Sure many people will know who Kevin Hart is now, well Cubs fans will know anyway. However, how many people know who he played for in college and how he performed? How many people know which team drafted him and how he came to be on the Cubs' roster? I couldn't answer any of the above questions, so I set off on a mission of discovery on Hart, just hours before he makes his first career start in the Major Leagues against the ...

Chicago Cubs: Living on a Prayer

July 8, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Speaking as a Cubs fan, it is amazing to me that this team is only three games behind St. Louis in the NL Central standings. Among all their problems, the two-time defending division champs are still in the hunt for the division crown.   The Outfield The outfield (Alfonso Soriano, Kosuke Fukudome, and Milton Bradley) combine to earn more than $33 million. Their individual stats just make a Cubs fan sick to his stomach. For how much they're are making, the outfield has definitely been the Achilles heel of his team. Bradley's stats, halfway through the season, make me ill. He's only batting .241 and has ...
