The Chicago alderman whose ward includes Wrigley Field wants to ban street vendors and the so-called "bucket boys," those kids who pound on overturned buckets with drumsticks, from the perimeter of the Friendly Confines. "Let the Disneyfication of Wrigleyville begin," declared Ald. Thomas Tunney.Actually, I made that up. What he really said was that it's a, "public safety issue," which is, of course, comical. I can see if you have complaints about the noise but public safety has nothing to do with it. Here's a video I shot of the drummers on Sunday playing along Sheffield Avenue. As you can see, Sheffield is ...
What a week Cub fans! Two weeks ago this was the most apathetic team I had ever seen, and now they are actually showing life! I think they actually want to win! What a good feeling this is! I can’t stop using exclamation points! The Cubs are good again! After last season’s dominance, I did not expect to be this happy to be two games over .500. But ever since Lou made some adjustments to the batting order, the team has shown signs of life. With Alfonso Soriano being dropped in the order, the team actually has a 1-2 punch at the ...
Chicago sports radio stations are reporting that the Chicago Cubs will place starting pitcher Ryan Dempster on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Friday, July 3.
Dempster reportedly has a fractured toe on his right foot.
Kevin Hart, who was just demoted on Monday, will be recalled to fill Dempster's rotation spot between now and the All-Star break next week.
UPDATE: Because the Cubs had optioned Kevin Hart to Iowa after the injury occurred, the team was not able to make the listing retroactive. Dempster's 15 days begin on Tuesday.
Dempster told a member of the media that he injured the toe hopping the ...
I will start off by giving credit to Alex Akita, who's article "Top-11: Most Randomly Awesome Seattle Mariners of All-Time" was the inspiration for this article. If you get a chance, check that article out as well as it is a good one.
This slideshow will take a look at some of the shortest tenured Cubs of the last decade.
Some of these guys filled in admirably for injured players, while some of them had laughably short and unproductive stays with the team, and were out the door as quickly as they came in.
For anyone who considers themselves a Cubs fan or ...
Aramis Ramirez returns from his DL stint against the Braves Monday (Cubbie Nation)
Click here for the photo gallery of Monday's Cubs-Braves game
If you could endure '70s night, Erik Estrada televised comments on porn, and Ron Jeremy's junk—no, I'm not joking—and the ESPN Monday night crew, you got to enjoy two things sure to make a Cubs fan happy—the return of third baseman Aramis Ramirez and the Cubs 4-2 win over the Atlanta Braves.
Aramis looked, well...rushed, finishing 0-for-5 with a trio of weak groundouts. The Braves even intentionally walked Milton Bradley in the seventh inning to get to him, something we're ...
One of the eternal mysteries of Wrigley, right up there with how they get the grass so green in April, is what it’s like inside the scoreboard. Fred Washington, who’s been flippin’ numbers at Wrigley since 1990, talked to Wise Guides about the “mystique” of the job.
Washington puts down the chalk baselines and takes care of other duties before climbing inside the scoreboard, where he’s joined by two or three workers. A ticker-tape machine spits out constant updates from around the league as the guys scramble to keep up.
Washington, a South Sider but die-hard Cubs fan, joined the grounds crew ...

Just when we thought we had a new owner, now comes word that the ongoing saga of "Let's make a Cubs deal" has a new angle.
According to Crain's Chicago Business, the Tribune has reached a tentative deal with a second buyer for the Cubs.
The second bidders are a group led by private equity investor Marc Utay. The report says that the Tribune Company will present both this, as well as the Ricketts family proposal to the bankruptcy court.
"We have not reached an agreement on terms with either party," Tribune spokesman Gary Weitman said.
Utay apparently ...
With the activation of third baseman Aramis Ramirez and outfielder Reed Johnson from the disabled list, two-game leadoff "star" Sam Fuld was returned to Iowa on Monday.
Sorry Sammy, but MLB is a tough, heartless business my friend.
Sure I know that in the two games you started at leadoff in place of $18 million dollar Alfonso Soriano, you went 4-for-8 and threw out a runner trying to score.
But hey, that wasn't good enough.
Look, your sample size just wasn't large enough, though you did impress manager Lou Piniella.
"...you know, we're obviously pleased with the two games. He's done well."
To his credit, Sam ...
CHICAGO—The Chicago Cubs cut the St. Louis Cardinals' lead in the National League Central to two games after they beat the Atlanta Braves 4-2, behind the arm of rookie pitcher Randy Wells and the bat of Derrek Lee.
Wells (4-3) has won four straight starts after going 0-3 in his first six outings with the Cubs.
The 26-year-old rookie has really lacked run support from the Chicago offense, but lately, it's been just enough. He went six strong innings, struck out four batters, allowed two runs, and did not allow any walks.
Wells has allowed three runs or more in only two of ...
The hopes of the Chicago Cubs' 2009 season may rest on the shoulders of one player.
Aramis Ramirez is set to make his return Monday.
Ramirez is coming off the DL after dislocating his left shoulder back on May 9. In rehab assignments, Ramirez was 3-for-6 with three walks. Lou Piniella said that he will insert Ramirez in the cleanup spot behind Derek Lee.
In the last five full seasons with the Cubs, Ramirez has been the offensive leader, averaging 31 home runs, 105 RBI, and batting .302. Along with his offense, his defense has steadily improved since coming to the Cubs in ...
