Slightly OT; One trip, and a lot of baseball

July 26, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Filed:July 24th, 2009 Brian Myrow celebrates his game-winning hit with teammates Lastings Milledge and Ian Snell (Cubbie Nation) No, I've not met my untimely demise, so sorry to those e-mailers who seem to keep wishing it. You know who you are. No, I'm sitting in a hotel room in Toronto, a few days into my summer tour around baseball. I'm actually in the middle of a week-long road trip, checking out how the other half lives around the game. It's a week of pretty much non-stop baseball, between catching live games, and tracking the Cubs on MLB.tv. Yes, I caught the Phillies series, and ...

Low Price, High Reward: Branyan and Bedard Could Be Good Fits For Cubs

July 25, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

On Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals acquired Matt Holliday from the Oakland Athletics. In my opinion, the move makes the Cardinals the favorites in the very tight NL Central.  The additions of both Mark DeRosa and Matt Holliday make the Cardinals lineup one of the more potent lineups in the league.  Does Cubs GM Jim Hendry have the needed resources to respond to the Cardinals trade? It's just a matter of looking outside the box. A phone call to Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik could go a long way in filling two glaring wholes. The Cubs are in desperate need of a left handed bat. Enter Russell Branyan—not ...

Chicago Cubs Quick Hits: Ted Lilly, Ryan Dempster and B.J Ryan

July 25, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

According to Chicago Tribune writer Paul Sullivan, the Cubs’ lone All-Star is likely heading to the disabled list. “Oh gosh, we were just talking about getting [ Ryan] Dempster back,” manager Lou Piniella said. “We were happy about that, and all of a sudden, the Lilly situation [comes up]. It seems like every time we get a player, we lose one. But let’s see what the MRI says on Theodore, and we can go from there.” Lilly has been the most consistent Cubs starter this season, going 9-7 with a 3.59 ERA. However, the timing of the injury couldn’t be better, as Dempster ...

Chicago Cubs Pitcher Ted Lilly to DL, Will Have Knee Surgery

July 24, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

According to David Kaplan, Chicago TV and radio broadcaster, Chicago Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly is headed to the DL. He had some insight into Lilly's arthrogram that took place on Friday. Lilly, the team's only all-star, was putting up great numbers throughout the season. This will likely be a huge blow to the Cubs, who are all ready in catch-up mode. Kevin Hart has already been penciled in to take Lilly's next start in the rotation. Ted Lilly is scheduled to have knee surgery on Monday, the recovery time is approximately 3 weeks.

The National League Central Division the Most Exciting in Baseball?

July 24, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

After sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals, the Houston Astros have made a statement to the league and have put themselves back in the division race for the very exciting Central Title. At this point in time they are 1.5 games back from the Cards and are in a second place tie with the Chicago Cubs, who are also playing strong baseball. Houston will now welcome the Mets into Tropicana stadium where they will go to battle for the next three days. This should be an interesting series and I can’t be the only one who finds the Johan Santana-Mike Hampton lefty ...

Chicago Cubs Trade Deadline Primer: Who Should They Target

July 24, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

It's Friday, July 24... I'm fairly certain I can assume every astute fan of Major League Baseball knows what that means. We're just seven days from the Deadline. Not a lot of movement has taken place, but the majority of the action has taken place in and surrounding the National League's Central Division. The Pittsburgh Pirates have already started their annual veteran auction, with talent going to the first bidder. Adam LaRoche and Nate McLouth have already left the Steel City, and rumors are that Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez aren't too far behind. Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the division (the top), ...

Wrigley Field: More Good Press on Wise Guide

Sports fans are going to love this.  The Wise Guide series of books presents a succinct, all-inclusive look into what fans of various teams need to know to enjoy their trips to the stadium.  The particular Guide I’m reviewing is for Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, but there are also Wise Guide books out for Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, AT&T Park, Ohio Stadium, and Notre Dame Stadium available at their Web site.  These books are perfect both for new fans who want the know-how that lifetime fans have built up over the years, and for the old pros who ...

As Jim Hendry’s World Turns II: Cardinals To Acquire Matt Holliday

July 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Reports on Thursday are that the St. Louis Cardinals have made another move to bolster their roster for a pennant chase. Earlier this month, the Cardinals traded for former Chicago Cubs infielder and fan favorite Mark DeRosa. Yesterday, they traded pitching coach Dave Duncan's son, Chris, to Boston for infielder Julio Lugo. Today, they traded one of their top prospects, third baseman Brett Wallace, to the Oakland A's for outfielder Matt Holliday. Holliday is in the final year of his contract, with a 2009 salary of $13.5 million. This raises more questions for the Cardinals, because they already had a full outfield. Colby Rasmus ...

DW’s Thought Of The Week: Does Sanchez Make Sense For The Chicago Cubs

July 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

So I was looking around for any trade news that I could find on the Chicago Cubs, and there was nothing of interest. There were some quotes from the Chicago Sun Times saying the Cubs have financial flexibility to make some moves at the deadline. Browsing the general section, I noticed Freddy Sanchez being linked with the Mariners and several other teams, but there is no mention of the Cubs...why is that? It's no secret that we have been struggling in offensive terms, much can be attributed to a certain someone out in right field, granted, I accept that. However we have ...

The Chicago Cubs and My First MLB Game Pt.3:The Unforgettable Contest!

July 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Here it was. The anthem had finished, and for a split second everything went quiet in the stands—everything went numb in my body. I was shocked at the moment of silence because I am sure it wasn’t the first time the vast majority of those fans were at a game, but that small immeasurable act of silence is a grand example of that little kid inside each and every one of us; standing out in left field waiting for the neighbor kid to stop striking out and hit the stupid ball. The game was always new no matter how old I thought, incredible. The ...
