Chicago Cubs: Could Angel Guzman Be Trade Bait?

July 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Can you feel the anticipation?  The July 31 non-waiver trade deadline is fast approaching.  This historically is always one of the most exciting times for any baseball fan, especially fans of the Chicago Cubs. The last several seasons, the Cubs have been buyers (and very well could be again this year), but what if they became something of a seller this year? Before I continue, know that I am in no way throwing in the towel for this season.  I'm well aware of the makeup of the NL Central, and the Cubs are still in position to win their third consecutive division title. It ...

Cubs Win Big Game Over Phillies, 10-5

July 22, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Cubs topped the Phillies Wednesday afternoon in a game that  almost felt like a must-win, after dropping the first two games in the series. Milton Bradley was in the line-up for the first time in the series, after working with Lou Piniella on his swing. It seemed as if the hard work paid off. Bradley, pictured above, went 2-for-4 with 2 singles and an RBI. There were many other good signs from many Cubs such as Soriano who has continued to come out of his slump (going 2-for-5 with an RBI).In the 6th inning, the Phillies lost their manager Charlie Manual, who was thrown ...

Signing Milton Bradley over Raul Ibanez Was a Game Cubs Never Should Have Played

July 22, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

In the offseason free agent market, there were two teams with great interest in right fielder Raul Ibanez. Today one team is thankful for acquiring the veteran, and the other wishes they had him.The Phillies signed Ibanez to a deal, and the Chicago Cubs were forced to find another option—so they made the decision that was supposed to help out more and signed Milton Bradley. It has not gone exactly to plan for the Cubbies, as Bradley has had a rough season on the field, on the bench, and at the plate. Bradley was thought to give the offense a ...

Preview Game 92: Philadelphia Phillies vs. Chicago Cubs

July 22, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Philadelphia Phillies have beat the Chicago Cubs in a pounding and on a walk off. What will they have in store this afternoon?A day after a pitcher's duel between former teammates, there will be quite a contrast in pitching styles today as the Cubs and Phillies wrap up a three-game set in Philadelphia. Jamie Moyer will go for his team leading 10th win of the season. His opposition will be the feisty and powerful Carlos Zambrano.Moyer has won in five-straight starts and has dropped his earned run average in the process. In his last start, Moyer ...

Come to Think of It…Cubs-Phillies: The Difference Is Hittability

July 22, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Similar to how that beer commercial talks about the difference being "drinkability," the main difference between the Cubs and the defending champion Phils is "hittability." Yes, there are other differences between the two teams. The Phillies have much more team speed, for example. And they are very successful in picking the right time to steal. In fact, their stolen base percentage is the best in the National League at 79 percent. The Cubs are last in the NL at just 60 percent. But the main difference, to me, is the offensive firepower that the Fightin' bring to the table. And we saw it ...

Would The Cubs Be Better Off With Jake Peavy?

July 22, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

So today I was thinking about the Cubs, and remembering back to when the season was young and the hopes were high. The first thing I remembered was Jake Peavy and how bad not just me, but all of Cubs nation wanted him. Knowing what we now know, would that have been a good move? We all know the dominance of Peavy—in eight years he has amassed 92 wins with a 3.29 ERA and all with very little run support. So why in any universe could there have been a set of circumstances where having Peavy might seem unappealing? So I'm going to ...

Yet Another Twist in the Sale of Cubs

July 22, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Another potential complication to the Ricketts family final purchase of the Chicago Cubs has arisen. According to IRN News the Chicago Tribune Company, who bought the Cubs in 1981 for $21 million, may have to take the team into bankruptcy to clear the Tribune company of any future debts related to its ownership of the team. This would allow bidders, including the Rickettt's family, to make new bids for the team. It is believed the asking price for the Cubs and Wrigley Field is $900 million. That number may be a little high, since Forbes Sports money has their current value ...

Milton Bradley and the $12 Million Ground Out

July 22, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

On Tuesday night, in the 11th inning of the Chicago Cubs game at Philadelphia, Milton Bradley entered the game as a pinch hitter. Batting from the left side, he did what he's done 80 percent of the time this year—failed to reach base. But this was perhaps the most expensive 4-3 putout in the history of the Chicago Cubs franchise. By appearing in the game for nothing more than a ground-out to Bradley's high school teammate, Chase Utley, he qualified as having appeared in 75 games in the 2009 season. For those that like to pay attention to contracts, you'll remember back in January ...

25 Cubs, 25 Comments: Part II

July 21, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Well, I had so much fun doing this the first time (by the way, feel free to check it out...shameless self-promotion) that I wanted to do it again.  With the second half underway, I want to share my current thoughts about this current roster. Before I begin, I wanted to point out how messy this current roster is: There is only one catcher (Koyie Hill). There are only really four outfielders (Alfonso Soriano, Kosuke Fukudome, Milton Bradley, Reed Johnson). There are eight infielders (too many to name at the moment). I can't remember a time when the roster was so, for lack of a better word, unorganized.  Granted, injuries ...

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly: Cubs Trades

July 21, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Cubs fans of all ages know that we as a team have had our fair share of one sided trades, mostly not going the Cubs way. This article I am going to make it a little different, only showing a few bad deals and one very, very, ugly deal while focusing more on deals the team benefited from. So, lets start off rough, and work our way towards good. The Ugly, most of you will probably know what I am going to talk about. The thing that hurt most about it? We sent him to our most hated rivals. That's right, ...
