Offense? Check.Pitching? Check. The Phillies had both covered last night in a 10-1 laugher at the expense of the Cubs, who had been making a surge in the NL Central. But the Phillies are continuing to roll as they go for their tenth straight win tonight.Joe Blanton gets the start tonight for the Phillies. Blanton has only faced the Cubs once but he received a no-decision after 5.2 innings of two-run baseball last August. The Phillies lost that game 3-2. Blanton has won two straight games and has allowed one run in 14.2 innings in ...
The Cubs looked to be getting well after the All Star break. Winning four games in a row was one shy of the season high of five straight games won. Don't get too carried away with the thought of the Cubs having a totally different second half though. The Cubs were playing the worst team in baseball, the Washington Nationals, who are currently on their way to posting the worst record by any baseball team.
Remember when Milton Bradley said, "You can mark it down, I'm gonna be hitting for the rest of the year," just over a week ago? Well, that has ...
Just when the Roy Halladay rumors started to hit high gear in Philadelphia, the current starting pitching got hot. Last night Rodrigo Lopez went six full innings, allowed one run on five hits, and struck out five batters, as the offense put a ten spot on the scoreboard. The Phillies beat the Cubs 10-1 to extend their winning streak to nine games. The Phillies wasted no time getting to Cubs starter Ted Lilly. In the first inning, with Jimmy Rollins at third base and Shane Victorino at second base, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard failed to bring a ...
Sometimes you need to shake up a roster. Six consecutive playoff losses in two years might warrant such a move.
However, when you tinker with your team, you should try to avoid making poor baseball decisions.
Jim Hendry must have forgot this fact last offseason.
Hendry decided to sell high on former Cubs' super-utilityman Mark Derosa. I didn't and still dont agree with this move. Derosa was not the guy you want involved in a "roster shakeup." Although, I do understand Hendry's business decision in trading a player who had reached his ceiling.
At the same time Hendry was patting his own back ...
What a difference a day makes.
Or a two hour drive north.
On Sunday, the Chicago Cubs finished a relatively easy four-game sweep at the Washington Nationals, running two rookie pitchers to the hill and finding an offense that had been dormant for a couple weeks.
The Cubs were now just two games behind the St. Louis Cardinals, despite their woeful first half. Things were looking up, right?
Rewind...the Cubs swept the Washington Nationals. On Monday they suited up against a real, major league roster.
In fact, it was against the defending World Champion Phillies in Philadelphia.
And so after a fun series that felt as ...
Sammy Sosa is one of the most talked about players in Baseball. He helped save Baseball along side Mark McGwire in 1998 when they both passed Roger Maris for most home runs in a season. Sosa hit 66 and Big Mac hit 70. Slammin' Sammy is the only player to hit 60+ homers in 3 different seasons. Hit 609 home runs in his career. He also has a MVP award.
The other stuff, he was caught using a corked bat. He walked out on the Cubs at the end of the 2004 season. It is reported that he tested positive for ...
If you want something done, sometimes you gotta do it yourself.
Forget Von Joshua. For now, Piniella has decided to take a more hands-on approach with Milton Bradley as his personal hitting coach. Piniella says he plans on working with Bradley on Monday as they prep for a three-game series with NL-East leading Philadelphia.
"I had a nice talk with Bradley [Sunday]," Piniella said. "I'm going to work with him personally for a while and see if we can get him going."
However, Piniella also said that Bradley may not be in the lineup on Monday or Tuesday to get Bradley some more ...
"Today was a step backward. It was a breakdown all the way around."-- Jim Riggleman, July 19, 2009.THE RESULTS: The Washington Nationals were handed two more defeats by the Chicago Cubs, who completed a four-game sweep of the worst team in baseball.Saturday, Washington's defensive indifference led to a three-run inning against rookie pitcher Jordan Zimmermann and the Nats eventually fell 6-5, despite having two on and one out in each of the final two innings.Zimmermann (L, 3-5, 4.63) was cruising until the sixth. Derrek Lee led off with a ball to left that would have been caught by a man ...
The Phillies are happy with the way things are going. Will they keep up the momentum against some tougher competition at Citizens Bank Park?Until recently, playing at home has been a detriment to the team. If not for an abysmal home record up through the end of June the Phillies could probably find themselves up at least 10 games in the division. Regardless, the Phillies have a nice buffer between them and the Atlanta Braves. To keep the momentum going, the Phillies will hope that Rodrigo Lopez can rebound after a short outing. Lopez left his last ...
Hack Wilson is just a name on a page to most fans. They think of him as a statistic—most RBI in one season 190. Oh, make that 191, because it was changed in 1999 due to a mistake made by an official scorer.
Friends, that is one boat-load of RBI. The closest to that which was "seen" by any of us was 165 by Manny Ramirez with 165 in 1999. A few men have had 100+ RBI by the All-Star break just to disappoint in the second half.
Wilson could hit like a Hall of Famer (which he is) until liquor became ...
