Report: Chicago Cubs Interested in Orioles’ Closer George Sherrill

July 20, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Reports late Sunday are that the Chicago Cubs are among a handful of teams in contact with the Baltimore Orioles regarding a potential trade for closer George Sherrill. Sherrill, 32, currently has 20 saves and a 2.35 ERA, while striking out 35 and walking just 12 in 38.1 innings pitched. The left-handed closer would, along with last week's addition of former Baltimore and Toronto closer BJ Ryan, give the Cubs more depth from that side of the bullpen then they've had in years. It also might open the possibility of Sean Marshall returning to the Cubs' starting rotation, as he's been the lone ...

Jason Marquis for Luis Vizcaino Trade

July 20, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Jason Marquis became the first major league pitcher to win 12 games on Sunday in a 6-1 defeat of the San Diego Padres. The Chicago Cubs' front office did not have a good offseason, but one of their worst deals was trading Marquis to the Colorado Rockies for Luis Vizcaino. While Marquis was winning yet another game yesterday, Vizcaino pitched only three-and-one-thirds innings for the Cubs before being designated for assignment in May. Vizcaino was originally signed by the Indians on May 14, but was released on July 1 after walking 12 and striking out 12 in 15 innings. The Cubs had signed Milton Bradley a day ...

The Nationals’ Lost Weak-End: Nearing a Milestone

July 20, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Today, I felt like I was seeing something pretty rare in pro sports—a team has completely, totally given up. Manny's teams never did that in 2007 or 2008, and though there were days that they seemed to be mailing it in, he had a knack for pulling them back and re-focusing them on the task at hand.If Jim Riggleman can't do that, if the effort we saw today becomes par for the course over the next 70 games, the Nationals could be just the third team since World War II to lose 75 percent of its games. That's something I've always assumed ...

Kevin McAllister Could Beat the Nationals…By Himself

July 20, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Cubs/Nationals series is always one of the cutthroat, can't miss series that has every baseball fan drooling.  This bitter rivalry dates back to the mid-2000s and has been going strong ever since. They even compete in the same league.  Whoa. Back to reality for a moment.  The Nationals are worse at baseball than I am at hyping up this matchup.  They are like Marv and Harry from the movie Home Alone—bumbling, stupid, awkward, and so on. Kevin McAllister would certainly be able to beat this team, just as he beat Marv and Harry twice.  But what an opportunity for the Chicago Cubs—to play, and beat ...

Come To Think Of It: It’s Only The Nationals, But I Like It

Mick Jagger once sang that "It's only rock-n-roll but I like it." While he was being tongue-in-cheek, since rock-n-roll has made the Rolling Stones' singer a multi-millionaire, there is nothing insincere about saying it's only the Nationals. For the Washington Nationals are a lousy team, let's face it. But you know what? The Cubs just swept them. And I like it. Sure, the Nats are almost 40 games under .500. But for a disappointing team like our Cubs, any good news is welcome. And a four-game win streak certainly qualifies as good news. Look, to be a contending team you not only need to ...

With This Ring: Cubs-Freddy Sanchez Marriage Could Break Curse, Bring Pennant

Have you ever tried to put together a 1,000-piece puzzle? It's a head-scratching and sometimes heartbreaking proposition. Just when you start getting some pieces falling into place, you can't seem to find the heads, hands, and legs to paint the picture taunting you on the box. After a while, reality sets in that no matter how many times you try to jam the pieces together, you know something is missing; you just can't find the piece. If someone down the street had that one face piece you so desperately needed and was willing to give it up for a few grass and cloud pieces, would you ...

Chicago Cubs 11, Washington Nationals 3: I Liked Everything That I Saw

July 20, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

I know I'm not supposed to be impressed when the home team beats up on the likes of the Washington Nationals. Worst team in baseball. Organization in disarray. Interim (and not very good) manager at the helm.I'd even been warned before the start of this series that the Nationals would implode at the first sign of any success, and well, that fan was pretty much correct. But what I've seen over the course of the weekend was a long-overdue power surge by the Cubs, the sight of both Kosuke Fukudome and Alfonso Soriano prospering in their respective new roles, and more ...

Cubs Sweep Nationals: Is This the Start of a Second-Half Surge?

July 20, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

By sweeping the Washington Nationals in their first four games following the All-Star break, the Chicago Cubs did exactly what they needed to do if they intend to make a playoff run over the second half of the season. In a division where five teams are currently within six games of first place, it was crucial that the Cubs not stumble and instead take advantage of their four-game series against the worst team in baseball. They did exactly that and finished the sweep in dominating fashion with an 11-3 victory. After displaying inconsistency both offensively and at the plate during the first half ...

Playtime is Over for the Chicago Cubs: Bring On the Champs!

July 20, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The month of July has been, by far, the kindest month yet for our Cubbies. We split two out of four against the Cardinals who are hovering just above average play right now, we stole three out of four against Milwaukee who has the HR derby crown to be happy about but nothing more, and as the 11-3 drubbing of Washington comes to a close in the background, we will take a four game sweep of those pesky Nats into the lair of the champs. Well I say BRING IT! The rumor of Lilly not being available for the series is now confirmed ...

To Buy or To Sell: Decision Time for Chicago Cubs Nears

July 19, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The second half of the baseball season couldn't have started any better for the Chicago Cubs.  On Sunday, the Cubs completed a four game sweep against the woeful Washington National in the nation’s capital.    Despite being just two games behind St Louis, it is unlikely the Cubs will make any significant moves before the July 31 trade deadline.  Next week appears to be a critical one for the Cubs.  First, they visit the World Champion Phillies for three before returning home to host the Reds for three.  Regardless of what happens, the Cubs don't appear to have the payroll flexibility to make any substantial ...
