Could The Cubs Make a Push For Roy Halladay?

July 19, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

As trade rumors intensify around the Blue Jays' ace Roy Halladay, the odds of him moving appear to be rising. However, the odds of Toronto receiving the crop of young talent they desire seems to be shrinking by the day. In the current economy, teams are trying to build winners more than ever before, and moving three or four top tier pieces just doesn't make sense to most franchises. For a team that's playing within an equally shrinking window of opportunity, especially one that has created a concrete ceiling over their farm system by overpaying veteran free agents over the last six ...

Cubs Call To The Pen

July 19, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Nothing against Soriano’s home run, but this win belongs to the bullpen. A pen, mind you, that’s come a long way since its April ERA of 5.37. Ever since late April, however, the relievers have collectively lowered its ERA each month to a very respectable 2.44 come July. Twice Saturday night the Cubs wiggled out of late inning bases loaded jams. But, that’s been the norm lately. Of the pen’s last 20 inherited runners, just a single one has scored! That’s big time! While the Cubs’ top priority is scoring more runs, second on that list is keeping a rock solid bullpen. That’s hugely important down ...

The Chicago Cubs and My First MLB Game, Pt. 2: The Magic of Hatfield Hot Dogs!

July 19, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

After catching my breath and settling myself down, it was time to take a more leisurely stroll around Citizens Bank Park. It was now about half-past six, and the game wouldn’t start for another 45 minutes, so it was a perfect time to take a gander at my surroundings; of course, most of that time was spent rubber-necking toward the field. I knew one thing had to be accomplished, but it had to be done so in a precise manner: Acquire a Hatfield Hot Dog. It was dollar dog night, and at some point, the right point, my hands had to be ...

UPDATE: Injured Cubs Are Making Good Progress

July 19, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Saturday got off to a good start when the questionable Alfonso Soriano was added to the Cubs' lineup before their night game versus the Nationals. Soriano, who had a swollen finger on his right hand, came out with a bang and helped lift the Cubs to their 6-5 victory with a home run in the sixth inning. That was Soriano's first home run in over seven weeks. Things are looking up for the All-Star left-hander, Ted Lilly. Lilly was supposed to pitch on Saturday but was replaced by Randy Wells due to some inflammation in his knee. Lilly said he could have pitched ...

A Fan’s Request Of Milton Bradley: Shut Up!

July 19, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

As the Chicago Cubs finished their series against the St. Louis Cardinals last weekend, they had reasons to feel upbeat after a disappointing first half. After all, they had played about as poorly as anyone could imagine for almost 90 games and were still only three games out of first place. But as the All Star Break began, it was as though the team was leaving Arizona to head north for the start of the regular season. Lots of hope in every locker, and Milton Bradley shooting his mouth off. Bradley, who signed a three-year contract before the season, has established himself as ...

The Top 10 Reasons the Chicago Cubs Won’t Make the Playoffs

July 18, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Chicago Cubs sit in a very intriguing position as the first post-All Star weekend is upon us. They're tied for second place in their division (albeit with almost half the division, Houston and Milwaukee) and are only chasing 3.5 games for the first place Cardinals. But the team has all sorts of issues, many of which I'll discuss in this piece. There's certainly room for hope on this roster, but there's a terribly big cloud surrounding any silver lining. So here are my Top Ten reasons the Cubs won't make the playoffs in 2009.

Report: Lily and Soriano Are The Latest to Be Bitten By The Injury Bug

July 18, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The injury bug is still going around in the club house on day two after the break. Left fielder, Alfonso Soriano and All-Star pitcher, Ted Lilly are the latest to be bitten. Soriano was scratched from game two versus the Nationals because of some swelling in a finger on his right hand. Soriano dislocated the finger after sliding into first base on Thursday night in the fourth inning. Soriano said of his injury, "The problem now is the swelling is too big and I cannot [grip the bat]." Soriano says he isn't worried about the pain. He just wants the swelling to ...

The Five Greatest Cubs Players of All-Time

July 18, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Cubs have had some awesome players over the years. Players like Ron Santo, Ferguson Jenkins, Greg Maddux, Ryne Sandberg, and the list goes on. What about the no names? Who makes the top five list? Do I put Santo over Mad Dog? How about Mr. Cub over Lee Smith? Decisions, decisions, decisions, decisions. What do I do? Let's take a look.

Come to Think of It: The Astonishing Transformation of Ryne Dee Sandberg

July 17, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

I’d like to introduce you to someone. His name is Ryne Sandberg. Yes, that Ryne Sandberg. Yet, no, not that Ryne Sandberg. For you don’t know this Ryne Sandberg. This Ryno is charging, my friends. Ryne Sandberg, who seldom, if ever, had a thought as a Cubs player, seems to really have found his personality since ending his playing days. First, there was the inspiring speech at his HOF ceremony, where he railed against steroid usage in MLB. And since he has become a manager in the Cubs minor league system, Sandberg has been very vocal with his players, the media, and even ...
