Chicago Cubs Fans Are Off the Mark To Blame Season on DeRosa’s Absence

August 5, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Featured on ChiCitySports.com While some Cubs fans are still waiting for the two time defending National League Central Division champions to run away with a third straight division title, many Cubs fans turned to whichever excuse they could find to explain why their team was “underachieving.” (Note to reader: In a game like baseball where parity is found day in and day out, thinking that tight division races wouldn’t exist is ludicrous. By the way, the Cubs are currently in first place. Hence the quotation marks.) From underachieving superstars to injured superstars to inexperience to talent deficit, there is plenty of blame to ...

Scheduling Conflict: A Week-By-Week Breakdown of the N.L. Central Race

August 5, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

It was an exciting night of opposites in the National League Central. The Cardinals came back as Francisco Rodriguez and the Mets blew a late lead, eventually winning a lop-sided game thanks to Albert Pujols' fifth grand slam of the season. Meanwhile, the Cubs held onto a lead in the ninth inning just for the heck of it. After all, you can't blow them all, can you? After those two games ended, the division was virtually tied, with the Cubs having a two game lead in the loss column. So let's look ahead to the end of the season. What do the schedules look ...

Tom Gorzelanny Impresses in Cubs Debut

August 5, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

It was about as good a debut as you can have, especially for a local product, born and raised in the Chicago area. Tom Gorzelanny made his debut tonight for the Chicago Cubs and was victorious against the Cincinnati Reds. Gorzelanny changed speeds well and was consistently ahead in the count against the helpless Reds, who have now lost eight straight games. Gorzelanny even helped himself with an RBI single in the sixth inning, giving him all the insurance he would need. Gorzelanny struck out six while only walking one during 7 1/3 innings Tuesday night.  Only three Reds were able to get hits off ...

Tom Gorzelanny: The Answer for the Chicago Cubs?

August 5, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Many people thought of Tom Gorzelanny as a "throw-in" in the recent trade between the Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is trying to prove otherwise. Most of the focus was on John Grabow when he and Gorzelanny were traded to Chicago. Grabow went straight to the major league team while Gorzelanny was sent to the triple-Aclub. It wasn't long until Gorzelanny was added to the Major League squad. Tom Gorzelanny was the starting pitcher for the Cubs on Tuesday night. He wasn't anything short of brilliant. He went seven-and-a-third innings, giving up only three hits and one run. Sean Marshall was actually pitching ...

Chicago Cubs’ Kevin Gregg Has Tired Arm

August 4, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

If you're a Cubs fan, you know the troubles closer Kevin Gregg has had over the past few games. In his last two appearances, Gregg has blown both save opportunities even though one turned out to be a win. If you were to ask Gregg, he would say he is ready even though Piniella wants to give him some time off for his tired arm. Yes, my fellow Cubs fans. That means an even worse nightmare has come true. Carlos "Wild Thing" Marmol will be closing. "I think we'll give [Gregg] a little time off tonight," Piniella said before Monday's game against the ...

The Wrigley Report: Aug. 4

August 4, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

If someone told you that on Aug. 4, 2009, the Chicago Cubs would be in first place in the NL Central division, you would probably think: “Well, yeah…and?” I’m sure that most Cub fans would have thought it to be a given. But thus far, it’s been anything but a given. The Cubs currently sit eight games over .500 at 56-48, which is good for a .001 percent lead over rival Saint Louis for best in the division even though the Cardinals sit zero games back. What has made the 2009 season such a fight for the Chicago Cubs? Let’s start with offseason acquisition Milton Bradley. Jim Hendry signed Bradley ...

Cubs 4, Reds 2; No Closer Controversy Here

Aaron Harang looked as sharp as ever Tuesday, but a fat pitch to Mike Fontenot in the second inning resulted in a three-run homer and proved to be the game-winner in a 4-2 Cubs win. Randy Wells is awesome. And I don't say that because of his talent, or the hot winning streak that he's on right now. I say it because he's a great reminder that for all of the scouting reports, draft analysis, prospect evaluations, and farm system rankings, players still have to go out and play, and average guys are capable of making big contributions.  A few years ago, guys ...

Could Chicago Sweep Baseball’s Rookie of the Year Awards?

August 4, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Could Kenny Williams and Jim Hendry be waving brooms in November? In 2008, the Cubs' rookie standout was catcher Geovany Soto. He started the All-Star Game and won the National League's Rookie of the Year Award. Meanwhile, on Chicago's South Side, Alexei Ramirez was a defensive Jedi the entire season and put up solid offensive numbers. He just happened to be a rookie the same season as Evan Longoria, and had to settle for runner-up to Tampa's third baseman. But in 2009, Chicago might sweep the awards. In front of a national television audience, the Chicago Cubs' Randy Wells made a case for ...

Carlos Marmol’s First Night as Chicago Cubs’ Closer

August 4, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Thankfully for Lou Piniella, Tylenol can prevent heart attacks. And a nice glass of Johnny Walker can settle a guy down an hour later. After Kevin Gregg was made unavailable with a "tired arm"(translation: he sucks), Marmol got his audition on Monday night to be the Cubs' closer. He got a nice layup of an opportunity, too. Randy Wells had been solid into the eighth inning, newcomer John Grabow got it to the ninth and Marmol only had to hold on to a three-run lead against a Reds team that had dropped 13 of their previous 14 games. But that's before Marmol made things ...
