Seattle Mariners: The Doug Fister Experience

August 12, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

When Doug Fister toed the rubber at Safeco Field, t-shirt makers, and to a lesser extent fans, were waiting in anticipation. He pitched six innings, allowing a hit, four walks, and no runs. But who cares? In the back of every mature, refined, sophisticated male’s brain remains at least a shred of our adolescence, specifically, the shred that used to chuckle internally during sex education. For the last couple of days there has been an outpouring of puns and double entendres by Mariner fans. It’s been a long time since a player received so much interest simply based on his name. Not even “The ...

Why The Chicago Cubs Should Shut Down Aramis Ramirez Until 2010

August 12, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

On Tuesday, Chicago Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez reportedly received a cortisone shot in his ailing left shoulder. He will be out of the lineup until at least Thursday's finale against Philadelphia. He should be out until next year's Spring Training. The Cubs are certainly in a fight for the Wild Card and their division crown. Despite their woeful showing in Colorado this weekend, the numbers would indicate that the Cubs have plenty to play for in August and September. That shouldn't change the Cubs' approach with Ramirez; he needs to be shut down for the winter now. Ramirez turned just 31 years old ...

Troy Tulowitzki’s Cycle a Mockery of Hallowed Baseball Record

August 11, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Similar to the fame gained from sluggers using performance-enhancing drugs, Troy Tulowitzki's cycle Monday night was cemented by rule bending. But this deceit was not his own creation. The Rockies shortstop homered in the first inning, struck a single in the next frame, then doubled in the fourth leaving him just a triple shy of the cycle. In his fourth at-bat, Tulowitzki torched a pitch down the left field line.As the play developed, it was clear from the get-go he would easily coast into second for a double. But then Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano bobbled the ball, triggering in Troy's mind advice teammate ...

The Chicago Cubs Need a Win: Something Has To Give

August 11, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Cubs need a win. They need a win badly. It seems as if the team is heading back to their old ways: Instead of losing games, they're finding ways to lose. Just some how, some way. Yes, to all the optimists, the Cubs have only lost two in a row. The only thing is, this late in the season you can't lose two in a row when the team you're trying to catch is winning. With the 11-5 loss last night to Colorado, the Cubs have fallen three full games back of the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs are a talented team. They ...

Carlos Zambrano: The Most Overpaid Player in Baseball?

August 11, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Sometimes you run across an article that is so ludicrous that it makes your head spin. This was one of them. Sometimes you run across an article that you can tell will be terrible just from the headline. This was one of them. As soon as I saw this headline, I knew I was in trouble: "Zambrano May Be the Most Overpaid Player in the Game " Oh, boy. Here we go. This guy has obviously never heard of Barry Zito or Vernon Wells: The facts don't lie. The Cubs are paying for top flight performance from apitcher who has the skills to be a ...

Come To Think of It: Things to Do In Denver When You’re Dead

August 11, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

"I called up my friend LeRoy on the phone. I said, "Buddy, I'm afraid to be alone. "I got some weird ideas in my head." About things to do in Denver when you're dead"—Warren Zevon.                                                     Well, I certainly hope that the Cubs found something to do during their four game series against the Rockies, because they sure looked dead on the field. Except for the one game they won, the Cubs couldn't hit with RISP; couldn't pitch, couldn't run and couldn't play defense. But other than that, how did you like the play Mrs. Lincoln? This should hardly come as a surprise. ...

Chicago Cubs’ Offense Needs To Stay Hot

August 11, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Cubs need to stay hot if they want to stay in this close NL Central division race. Carlos Zambrano is the most recent victim of the DL for the Cubs. These things have happened a lot to the Cubs this season, but they have battled to stay close to the top of the NL Central. Aramis Ramirez has also been hurt recently. This time it’s his left shoulder. It is not, however, supposed to be serious, and Ramirez will decide Monday whether he will play the last game of the four-game series against the Rockies. As of Saturday, the Cubs ...

A Different Perspective: My Road to Wrigley Weekend

August 10, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Well, with the Cubs out of town, summer finally arriving in Chicago, and a chance to see something a little different, I decided to veer off a bit last weekend, and catch the non-MLB games at Wrigley Field. Besides, I figured if that second career as a sport photographer is to bloom, you have to shoot whenever and wherever you can. First up was the Under Armour All-America game on Saturday. It's a great game actually, featuring a few dozen high school All-Americans broken into teams; the Baseball Factory squad and Team One. Both companies are co-sponsors of the event. Never ...

Chicago Cubs in Need of a Win: Game Four Preview

August 10, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Tonight, at 7:40 ET, the Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies are going to square off at Coors Field for the final game of their four game set. So far, Colorado has two wins and Chicago has one. Tonight's pitching match up features new guy, Tom Gorzelanny (4-1) for the North Siders and Jorge De La Rosa (9-8) for the Rockies. Gorzelanny made a great first impression in his debut for the Cubs. He threw 7 1/3 innings of three-hit ball against the Reds back on Aug. 4. He even helped himself with a RBI single. Gorzelanny has one goal for his time in the ...

Rockies-Cubs: Colorado Loses Ground in NL Wild Card Race With Loss

August 9, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

As the Rockies took the field for their second game against the Cubs, Jason Marquis was going for his 13th win for the third time today and again could not reach that unlucky number. Against Chicago, his former team, Marquis had good stuff, especially early, but he slowly wore down and left the game after the sixth inning. He gave up eight hits, five earned runs, and also allowed five walks in a sub-par performance for the All-Star pitcher. And, as the season rolls on into the late stages, Marquis’ record is evening out, now at 12-8, as he’s lost three in ...
