A Chicago Sports Fan’s Dream Day: Live Blog from Wrigley & Soldier Field

September 3, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

It all started with a thunderstorm. On June 16, I was all set to attend the first game of the Crosstown Classic between the Cubs and the White Sox at Wrigley Field.  Then Mother Nature struck, postponing the game. Instead of playing a double header, the game was rescheduled for the first mutual off day, Sept. 3.  As fate would have it, the Chicago Bears, the team for whom I hold season tickets, just happened to be playing their fourth and final preseason game on that same day. I’ve been racking my brain, and I can’t think of another time when a Chicagoan, ...

Chicago Cubs 2, Houston Astros 0: Ted Lilly Pitches Gem in Win

Click here for the photo gallery to Wednesday's game. Quick. Well-played. Successful. If the Cubs are going to make up any playoff ground in September, Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Astros is going have to be the template for that success. How quick? Unofficially, about 2:17, which is less time than it took to write this post, and edit photos from the game. Cubs fans got treated to quite a pitching duel, as Ted Lilly face up against a surprising effective Felipe Paulino for the Astros. I like this kid. Big guy, with some major heat, a big over-the-top curveball, and you can ...

Time For Teams To Take Reality Checks

September 2, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Chicago Cubs GM Jim Hendry probably is wishing this scene had never took place when the Cubs signed Milton Bradley to a three year contract for $30 million before his lackluster season in which he has 37 RBI's on September 2 and is hitting .230 with runners in in scoring position. With most teams having about 30 games left in the 2009 season it is time for some reality checks. The season ends on Sunday, October 4. My method of eliminating teams isn’t foolproof but if a team is 10 games out of first place at the start of September they can ...

Astros 5, Cubs 3: Rich Harden Staying, but He Didn’t Show Up Monday

September 1, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Click here for the photo gallery of Monday's game.   Well, let me give you some good news first. August is over. The Cubs can hopefully forget about their woeful 11-17 record for the month, and begin September with a clean slate, a sound head, and some respectable play on the field. And I'm going to try to forget that the Cubs front office basically chose to stand pat, silent while the team basically imploded in front of their eyes. The bad news? August is over. Those coming to the park last night were treated to unseasonably cool weather—that means jackets—and the first real ...

Chicago’s Two Baseball GMs: One Gets It, One’s an Idiot

September 1, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Could there be a more contrasting series of hours between two baseball teams in one city? Late last week, the Chicago Cubs had two pitchers in the final years of their respective contracts, Rich Harden and Aaron Heilman, claimed on waivers. Reports were that the Minnesota Twins claimed Harden, while the San Francisco Giants claimed Heilman. Harden has been very good lately for the Cubs, but he's one of a very small number of players on the Cubs' roster about whom that can be said. The North Side Ship is sinking fast, and Harden could have brought back a few prospects from ...

Come To Think Of It: Cubs in Denial While White Sox Look to the Future

September 1, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

One of the many differences between White Sox General Manager Kenny Williams and Cubs GM Jim Hendry is that Kenny harbors no illusions of the playoffs this season. Could it still happen? Sure, mathematically at least. But is it likely? Hell no. And it's even less likely for the Cubs, of course. The division is out of reach and the wild card requires climbing over too many teams. Plus, the Cubs aren't playing like they want it anyway. So the White Sox supposedly send a memo to the other clubs that Jermaine Dye, Jim Thome and Scott Linebrink are available. And why not? ...
