Cubs Not Completely Awful, Win Over the Braves

April 9, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Well, the inevitable happened Thursday, and the Cubs took home their first 'W ' for the 2010 season. Cubs pitcher Randy Wells (1-0) pitched remarkably well, although I still be he could go back to catching full time, and perform to the Cubs' standard . There are several very nice things to be taken from this game. We'll begin with Randy Wells' performance. Wells sat at around 90 mph with his fastball, with his sinker sitting on average at 89. He threw his sinker 35 times and hit the zone about 75 percent. Pitch diversification was a key for Wells, as ...

Lou Piniella’s Bullpen Usage: Sean Marshall Good, John Grabow Bad

April 9, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

In the first three games of the Chicago Cubs' 2010 season, both Sean Marshall and John Grabow have appeared in each game. Each man is a left-handed pitcher in manager Lou Piniella's bullpen. That is where all similarities end. Marshall has logged 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven batters and allowing no base-runners. Grabow, meanwhile, has thrown 1 1/3 innings, giving up two hits and a walk. One of the hits was a two-run home run by Chipper Jones in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game, a shot that cost Chicago the game. The walk came against the only batter Grabow faced on ...

Tyler Colvin Silences Skeptics, Cubs Get First Win

April 9, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Must I say I told you so? Thursday, Tyler Colvin, 24, made his first start of the 2010 season at Turner Field for the Cubs after slow starts from Alfonso Soriano, Kosuke Fukudome, and the entire Chicago offense for that matter. Colvin faced numerous skeptics after demolishing opponents in spring training—the outfielder hit .468 while slugging .753 and driving in 18 RBI’s in 77 plate appearances—but few of those doubters still remain. In his first at bat, Colvin belted a deep home run to right field off Atlanta right-hander Tommy Hanson in the top of the second inning. Colvin finished the game 1-3, with ...

Chicago Cubs: 10 Burning Questions for 2010

April 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The Cubs had high expectations going into 2009, but they were a disappointment coming out of it. There were antics. There were injuries. There was poor performance. They just didn't deliver. Cubs' GM Jim Hendry set out to change all that, coordinating an exodus of 2009's goats and bringing in a few fresh faces this offseason. There were plenty of things that were burning by the end of last season, some of them likely in effigy, but in the early goings of 2010, we just have questions. You may have your own list that you would like to thoroughly go over with the Cubs brass, ...

Around The MLB: Piniella on His Way Out of Chicago

April 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

On a night when three of the worst teams in baseball kept their respective powerhouse opponents at bay -the Pirates played the Dodgers, the Reds faced the Cardinals and the Nationals battled the Phillies– even the Chicago Cubs saw a glimpse of offense as they led the Atlanta Braves, just as the apocalypse seemed to be setting in on Wednesday night.  Unfortunately, the stars couldn’t quite align. Chicago once again played too much like the Cubs and fell to the Braves after an eighth inning homerun by Chipper Jones, while only the Pirates, Indians and Blue Jays were able to edge ...

At Least the Chicago Cubs Are No. 1 in One Thing…Ticket Prices

April 7, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Look, when you're a long-suffering Cubs fans like myself, you have to find your success's where you can. So, when I heard the news that the Cubs passed the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees for the highest non-premium average ticket, I shouted: "We're Number One! We're Number One!" OK, so this isn't much to get excited about. In fact, it hurts because going to Wrigley Field is just so darn expensive these days that as a family man, I just can't afford it. And to be able to charge an average ticket price of $52.56 despite not having won ...

Why Chicago Is the Greatest City for Sports in the World

April 7, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

I am a Chicago-area native and have been a fan of all things Chicago for years.  I was born in 1983, the year before the Bears won the Super Bowl.  While I do not remember the game as I was too young, I am just happy I was alive for the win. In Chicago there are legacies that simply cannot be touched by any other team or city, when you put all those things together you get a city known for sports excellence and I'll tell you why.   1.  Chicago Bears The Chicago Bears are nothing less than a dynasty.  Having had one ...

Can a Kinder, Gentler Carlos Zambrano Still be Effective?

April 7, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

So much was made of the fact that while, yes, Carlos Zambrano pitched terribly on Monday, at least he didn't act like a maniac on the mound. Oh yeah, that has been the source of much of the criticism levied against Big Z over the years. That is, he has acted immature at times, and that his behavior on the mound is part of the reason why he has failed to live up to his status as the ace of the Cubs. So a slimmer, calmer Zambrano showed up in camp this spring and most everyone said that he was headed for a ...

Chicago’s Opening Day as Mixed as Can Be

April 7, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

It was a tale of two Opening Days for Chicago's two Major League Baseball teams.  One club impressed in every way possible, the other not so much.  All of it took place before the sun even went down. The White Sox were the first team to show off their 2010 selves and their premiere couldn't have been more perfect.  A combination of solid pitching, hitting, and defense translated into an easy 6-0 win over the Cleveland Indians.  Every Sox fan in the stands at sold-out U.S. Cellular Field would tell you afterwards that they got their money's worth. Mark Buehrle was the ...

Cheers and Jeers for the Chicago Cubs, and Other Opening Day Notables

April 6, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Filed:April 5th, 2010 What were you expecting exactly? Consider me fairly non non-plussed about the Cubs 2010 opener, a 16-5 shellacking by the Atlanta Braves down at Turner Field, for a couple of different reasons actually. Carlos Zambrano, although the 1 1/3 innings was by far his worst Opening Day start, tends to come out of the box with these sorts of appearances. Personally, I always thought he's a bit too amped, and his high fastballs yesterday didn't do anything to change that opinion. Here's to hoping that sinker—consistently about six inches too high on Monday, as were all his other pitches—gets ...
