Look, Carlos Zambrano makes a hell of a lot of money. If he is going to provide any return on that investment, it has to be as a starting pitcher, not a reliever.
You don't pay relievers $18 million per season. Plus, he isn't doing a good job in that role anyway.
If the Cubs had listened to my advice two years ago and again last year, they would have traded Big Z when they had the chance.
When I wrote the articles, many Cubs fans said no way you trade Zambrano. And even the ones who thought it made sense wanted a ...
On Wednesday, Carrie Muskat wrote an article in which she said that "There are no deals pending, no scouts scouring other rosters to find help."
It wasn't a quote from Jim Hendry. It was just a line added into the article between quotes from the Cubs' general manager.
More specifically, it came immediately before the following quote from Hendry:
"There really isn't anywhere to look," Hendry said. "I would think our position players are not a weakness at all. We're just in one of these funks where we can't get over the hump and get runs in. It's not for ...
The Cub's season hasn't started off too bad, but some think they have underperformed given the payroll and the "stars" they have on their lineup. You can make a legitimate argument that the rate the players are getting paid, they should be performing at a higher level, yielding better results. But that doesn't seem to be the case.
The Cubs have the third highest payroll ($146,859,000), only trailing the Red Sox and, of course, the Yankees. Since your paying these players the big money to win you hope they can win a division title or, idealistically, a World Series title.
It doesn't look the ...
Since Carlos Marmol was moved to full-time closer duties, a big question was not how Marmol would perform in the new role, but who would replace him as the set-up man or relief ace role.Sean Marshall has answered all those questions, dominating opposing offenses as a full-time reliever this year.Marshall currently sports a sparkling 2.70 ERA in 18 relief appearances, which doesn't show how truly awesome he is pitching, as his Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) is sitting at 1.29.He is striking batters out at a ridiculous 11.34 K/9 clip, and he is hardly walking anyone, leading to an otherworldly 7.00 ...
I know it's early and a small sample size. But this shout out to Marlon Byrd goes beyond his early season statistics, which are pretty good by the way.
The man plays the game the right way. He seems to be a genuinely decent human being and a teammate who cares about winning.
In short, he is the opposite of the things many of us dislike about recent Cubs teams.
Sure, the fact that Byrd is hitting .341 with six homers and 24 RBI helps. But it's the way he goes about his business that impresses a cynical, long-time Cubs fan such as ...
On a gloomy Wednesday afternoon at Wrigley, Cubs' right-hander Carlos Silva improved to 4-0 in his seventh start of the season. With a 4-3 win over the visiting Florida Marlins, Silva is off to his best start since 2004, where he began the season 5-0 for the Twins.
Sports fans and analysts alike were skeptical when Chicago General Manager Jim Hendry announced that the Cubs, after finishing the 2009 season 86-76, had acquired Silva for clubhouse virus Milton Bradley, and cash, from the Seattle Mariners.
Bradley has struggled again this season. He's since been placed on the inactive list after asking the Mariners front ...

One week ago the Cubs were 13-13, coming off of a sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks and looked to be back on track to get the most out of their team this season.
All was well in Wrigleyville.
Fast-forward to present day and the Cubs are 14-20 and coming off of being swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates (14-19), and about to suffer the same fate against the Florida Marlins (16-17) pending tomorrow’s matinée, as the Cubs try to stop their four game slide.
So ...
A lot of people today forget how the game was in the early 1990’s. The Cubs and Braves thanks to WGN and TBS respectively rivaled the Yankee’s in popularity. The Atlanta Braves held an advantage over the Cubs at the time because the Braves were the better team. In my home town every kid was a Braves fan, with a few Cubs fans scattered about.
WGN and TBS also had a habit of showing a lot of the same horrible TV shows, even at the same time. My sister and I would fight over the TV after school I wanted ...
When you look at Randy Wells' stat line, nothing really jumps out at you. He currently sports a poor 4.86 ERA, and an even worse 1.50 WHIP.Those numbers are frightening to any Cub fan (and furthermore, any prospective fantasy owner), but there is evidence that Wells is having a better year than his rookie season, and quite simply is really, really unlucky. For starters, Wells is striking out batters at a clip nearly two batters per nine (7.56) more than last year (5.66). He is walking less batters, and is producing ground balls even better than last year. The combination of ...
Last week, Double G Sports battled Sports Page Network in Battle of the Blogs Fantasy Baseball. I was fortunate to come away with a 13-6-1 win over the blog network I write for. My offense took over and capitalized on Sports Page Network missing it's star catcher Joe Mauer. I won the week with a team batting average of .267. My team knocked seven home runs this week. Sports Page Network had just three home runs the entire week. The lose of Mauer may have hurt his team drastically. I ended up winning ...
