Chicago Cubs’ Starlin Castro Surpasses Expectations in Major League Debut

May 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Finally, it appears that the Chicago Cubs are willing to show some backbone in the dugout after the promotion of Class AA shortstop Starlin Castro to the Major League roster. Castro made his highly anticipated MLB debut on Friday—after a series sweep by the Pirates left the rotation gasping for run support.  For the first time in four years, Ryan Theriot was moved over to second base to supplement the promotion of Castro.  In his first at bat as a major leaguer, Castro hit a three-run home run in the away half of the second inning and finished the game two hits ...

A Starlin Is Born in Chicago: Cubs’ Castro Notches Home Run, Six RBI in Debut

When the Chicago Cubs called up 20-year-old shortstop Starlin Castro from Double-A Tennessee early yesterday afternoon, many had their doubts as to whether or not the Cubs were making the right move. It took about 45 minutes into his major league debut to erase any doubts that the Cubs made the right move.   In his first major league at-bat, Castro took a hanging curveball from Cincinnati Reds’ starter Homer Bailey and deposited it into the right field stands for his first major league hit and obviously his first major league home run. However, Castro wasn’t done yet. In his third at-bat of the game ...

Starlin Castro Shines Bright in Chicago Cubs Debut

For the Cubs, a rookie without a ceiling comes along far too rarely.  After watching Starlin Castro's debut in Cubbie Blue on Friday night, we may have found the next one. It was only two years ago, in the summer of 2008, that Cubs fans watched Geovany Soto mash to a line of .285, 23, 86.  He went on to win the 2008 Rookie of the Year award before falling off the face of the earth after a marijuana incident at the World Baseball Classic in the Spring of 2009. Prior to Soto, the Cubs next most recent ROY winner was Kerry ...

Starlin Castro: Can He Be The Spark Plug For The Chicago Cubs?

May 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

This comes fresh off the press: I just witnessed the Chicago Cubs' 20-year-old prospect, Starlin Castro, smack a 3-run homer outta the ball park—on his first Major League at-bat. Now, I guarantee you the internet will be off the hook tonight regarding Castro. Some may be similar to what you're about to read, and some may talk about how Chi-Town will burst into the playoffs from Castro's presence.  I'm here to give you my honest opinion. The kid is talented. There's no doubt. But, I have a few concerns. First, I don't see us making it far. Even if we do somehow lead the ...

Chicago Cubs Bring Up Shortstop Starlin Castro

May 7, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The biggest news so far today is the Cubs’ decision to call up 20-year-old Dominican shortstop Starlin Castro all the way from AA ball.  Castro was hitting a robust .376 with a .990 OPS for the Tennessee Smokies in the Southern League, but that’s a long way from the Show. Castro is one of the more highly regarded prospects in baseball (Baseball America ranked him 16th among all prospects before the start of this season), and players his age sometimes progress very quickly. Still, Castro’s OPS in 2009 was only .734 last year, when he spent about three-quarters of the season in the ...

Prospect Report: Does Cubs’ Starlin Castro Have Fantasy Value in 2010?

May 7, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Cubs GM Jim Hendry called up highly-touted prospect Starlin Castro Friday morning, a move that’s been widely speculated for the past week. The 20-year-old Castro was hitting .376/.421/.569 with 14 extra-base hits, 20 runs, 20 RBI and four steals in 26 games at Double-A Tennessee this season. In 127 games last year between High-A and Double-A , Castro hit .299/.342/.392 with 32 extra-base hits and 28 stolen bases. The Cubs view Castro as an elite shortstop prospect, as the 2006 signee from the Dominican Republic “has drawn comparisons to Edgar Renteria, Miguel Tejada—and even Derek Jeter” according to Baseball America . Castro makes adjustments at the ...

Cubs-Reds Preview: May 7-May 9

Add Paul Maholm, Charlie Morton, and Brian Burres to the list of opposing starting pitchers that Cubs hitters can't solve. I don’t even think those guys have baseball cards. The North Siders (13-16) dropped all three games to the Pittsburgh Pirates and now find themselves in fourth place in the National League Central. Next up for the Cubs is a three-game set in Cincinnati, and they face the same starters they faced in the second series of the season—when they dropped two of three. The Cubs have called up phenom shortstop Starlin Castro, and he is expected ...

NEWS: Starlin Castro Called Up By Chicago Cubs

May 7, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The "stuff" has hit the fan for the Chicago Cubs. In breaking news late Friday morning, the Cubs have recalled their top prospect, 20-year-old Starlin Castro. Castro will reportedly bat eighth in the Cubs lineup and start at shortstop, moving Ryan Theriot to second base, as the Cubs face the Reds in Cincinnati at 7:10 pm EST. If you haven't heard of Starlin Castro, here's your introduction. Castro, who turned 20 on March 24, had a fantastic run in the Arizona Fall League that brought him national attention. Now his presence in Spring Training has some people in the Chicago media asking Ryan Theriot how soon he'll be ...

Breaking News: Starlin Castro Called Up By Desperate Chicago Cubs

May 7, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

ESPN's Enrique Rojas tweets that the Cubs have called up Starlin Castro.  As I wrote in a recent article, my main concern with calling up this 20-year-old shortstop phenom is that the manager, Lou Piniella, will simply do to him what he's done to Tyler Colvin. That is, sit him on the bench. Look, the only reason to bring Castro up is to play him every day as your starting shortstop. Period. End of story. But again, we all know that this is potentially Lou's last season in Chicago so he tends to go with the hot hand. What if Castro struggles? And he will struggle, this ...

Starlin Castro Called Up By Cubs

May 7, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

It's being reported by ESPN Deportes that the Chicago Cubs have called up top prospect short stop Starlin Castro. I heard the Score just report this on the Danny Mac show. If it does get confirmed as truth it is a very odd move as current shortstop Ryan Theriot is playing well, and the fact he's not here already was widely believed to save his service time. There's only about three weeks left till his service time eligibility isn't a factor. Stay tuned.Read more Chicago Cubs news on BleacherReport.com
