Monday is the first day of Major League Baseball's three-day First-Year Player Draft.
There are 50 rounds stretched out over those three days and, from the somewhat limited research that I was able to do, it seems that five or six players, on average, from any given team's draft class will eventually reach the big leagues.
Of course, that doesn't take into account that teams typically only sign a little less than 30 of their picks every year. Most teams will probably draft one future major leaguer (maybe even two) that they won't sign.
That means that baseball fans can probably expect to ...
As the Chicago Cubs—though still premature—close in on their first losing season season since 2006, one thing may be able to relinquish an utterly disappointing season.
Currently, numerous mock-draft web sites have the Cubs taking yet another pitching prospect, ranging from Alex Wimmers and Asher Wojciechowski, to Stetson Allie and Drew Pomeranz.
As seen with Chicago pitcher-prospects Jeff Samardizija and Jay Jackson, developement of young pitchers can be time consuming, and possibly result in career minor league pitchers.
So the question should be asked: Does the Chicago Cubs front office have the patience to wait for another mediocre hurler to earn his stripes? And the question can ...
Oh man, it's been so many months since I've done an MLB Rumor Mill at BleacherReport.com. It's been ages, literally!
So here I am, back with the MLB Rumors. And that brings me to another thing: I haven't written an MLB article for a long time, too. Jeez.
Oh well, here is my first MLB Rumors and just any MLB article since I fell off my dinosaur (kinda corny, I know).
Some of the rumors we'll be discussing are Prince Fielder in trade talks, and Derrek Lee to the Los Angeles Angels.
So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!
Read on!
Let's go!Begin ...
Over the past several years Carlos Zambrano has been the keystone to the Cubs starting rotation, leading the group as the ace since the days of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood. The fact of the matter is that Zambrano hasn't posted an ERA under 3.50 since 2007, and for a "power pitcher," he has only exceeded 200 strikeouts twice in his seven year tenure as a starting pitcher. Zambrano has always dazzled fans with both his electric fastball and temper, but the fastball that reached the mid-90s and posted positive win values each year of his career ...
Now in their 135th season as a franchise, the Cubs have seen their fair share of great players come and go, and with those great players have come some memorable seasons.
I have compiled a list of what I feel are the 10 best offensive seasons in Cubs history. I limited each player to only one season on the list, or it would have been mostly Sammy Sosa and Ernie Banks.
With 135 years of history, it was tough to chose just 10, but it is hard to argue with anyone on the following list. That said, I encourage you to do ...
According to Chicago Tribune sources, the Cubs may be in talks with the LA Angels involving first baseman Derrek Lee.
The Angels recently lost their first baseman, Kendry Morales, when he broke his leg in a freak accident at home plate after he hit a walk-off grand slam.
According to the Fred Mitchell and David Kaplan report, "Lee was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup because of tightness in his right hamstring."
If Lee is in fact being dangled in trade talks, it would certainly be interesting, as it could signal the beginning of an admittance by the Cubs that the season ...
Top Pitching Prospect Andrew Cashner was called up recently, and I was alarmed on how little was being written of him within the Chicago Cubs blogosphere. This has most to do with his performance, being neither good nor bad, since he only threw one pitch against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 31 Cashner came into the game in the eighth inning, relieving 'super-stud' Sean Marshall, who had given up a run on a Bobby Crosby single. Cashner came into the game with the tides shifted in Pittsburgh's favor, and only 16.1% chance of winning. With the leverage index ...
Recently, Lou Pinella said he had to start the players who were swinging the bats the best. So he promptly started Xavier Nady's glistening .222 batting average (though he has been getting better lately).
However, just looking at overall season performance, here's the best possible offensive lineup for the Cubs.Begin Slideshow
As the Cubs struggle, there have been some bright young players bringing serious support to the Cubs roster. Starlin Castro, James Russell, Tyler Colvin and now Andrew Cashner have shown the recent trend in the Cubs organization.
I will break down the Cubs minor league teams by hitters and pitchers, based on who I feel, based on 2010 performance, could help the team, be it by their arrival in Chicago or as trade components. Starting it off in no particular order are my personal top five position players for the 2010 AAA Iowa Cubs.Begin Slideshow
When Tyler Colvin tore the cap off the ball in spring training, many people though it to be a fluke. It's now June, and Colvin's batting average is still over .300, proving he's got what it takes to contribute at the major league level.
However, there's a big problem: Colvin can't find playing time. He's stuck as the fourth outfielder amongst three performing veterans in Alfonso Soriano, Marlon Byrd, and Kosuke Fukudome. And, although Lou Pinella promised Colvin playing time, those three have been performing too well to bench them a few times a week.
There is a position it would ...
