The '90s were an interesting time for baseball. We saw the first Canadian world champion and a strike that devastated the game.
We saw the reemergence of the Evil Empire and one of the classiest men in baseball break the consecutive games started streak, and we saw a home run chase that made baseball America's pastime once again.
This was all fueled by the players themselves. I made this list based on many factors including stats, accolades, impact on the game, and my own opinion, among other things.Begin Slideshow
If this is what he truly believes, then it's no wonder that former Cubs broadcaster and current Sox color man Steve Stone was never hired as a GM.
I understand that Zambrano has not fared well in recent years as a pitcher—starter or reliever.
I also know that Big Z has not lived up to his humongous contract.
But to seriously suggest that the Cubs try and make their former ace a first baseman is about as stupid of an idea as I've ever heard.
Look, Zambrano's reputation as a hitter is vastly overrated. He is a pitcher and even compared with other pitchers ...
This article is part four of a series of articles looking at the Cubs' not-so-distant future. To read part three, which takes a look at the middle infielders and catchers, follow this link.
The Cubs have pitching.
The rotation of Ted Lilly, Ryan Dempster, Carlos Silva, Tom Gorzelanny, and Randy Wells has been good enough to post a FIP of 3.87 (fourth in MLB), an xFIP of 3.99 (second in MLB), and a total of 55 quality starts (second in MLB). And that's all without removing Carlos Zambrano's less-than-stellar outings from the bunch.
Carlos Marmol and Sean Marshall have been great, James ...
On Friday, June 25 the Chicago Cubs suspended Carlos Zambrano after he went on a tirade following a four run outburst by the Chicago White Sox. I believed then, as I do now, that the Cubs made a much bigger deal over this than they should have.
Zambrano has a history of emotional outburst and needs to learn to control himself. However, the Cubs need him, and they should have seen this coming.
Zambrano was once one of the best pitchers in the national league. It can be argued that from 2004 to 2008, he was one of the best. ...
The All-Star break is fast approaching and it is safe to say that the Cubs should be sellers at this season's trade deadline.
In my opinion, it's time for a good old fashioned fire sale.
The Cubs have a very strong minor league system, and it could be made even stronger if they were to clean house and deal anyone of any value not named Colvin, Cashner, or Castro.
So if we are in fact in full scale fire sale mode, here are the six Cubs that have the most value on the trade market, and should be dealt before the deadline ...
In Anaheim, cubs owner Tom Ricketts said he fully supports GM Jim Hendry, though he stopped short of guaranteeing Hendry job security.
According to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat, Ricketts had this to say:
"The fact is right now, Jim is our general manager, I support him, I think he does a great job, and after that we'll just take it one day at a time," the chairman said.
"I'm not going to assign blame to anyone or anything," said Ricketts. "The fact is we came into the season, we had what appeared to be a pretty strong lineup. It ...
With the Mets having lost the Cliff Lee sweepstakes, they still are in need of another starting pitcher. Losing the last two games to the Braves and falling to five games out of first place and two back in the wild card race have made this need even more obvious.
Names that have recently come up in connection to the Mets include Ted Lilly, Fausto Carmona, Jake Westbrook, and Dan Haren. However, all of these players come at a price.
A popular name that is being thrown around as a player who the Mets would ...
Even those who support Cubs GM Jim Hendry, and I am not one of them, point to his record trading for players to help the club.
But Hendry has really not had any experience selling off assets to contending teams for future prospects.
But that is exactly what the Cubs need to do. They must be sellers, as this club is not even remotely in the pennant race and therefore, need to start thinking about next year and beyond.
Look, this is a really bad team. Still, they have pieces that other clubs may want and if so, they need to be willing ...
It is becoming more and more apparent that the New York Mets will not be able to acquire Cliff Lee. While they were already bidding against the Minnesota Twins and the Texas Rangers, it now appears that the New York Yankees have jumped into the mix as well.
The Yankees are rumored as the favorites to land Lee.
It is believed that the Mariners are going to accept the Yankees deal, which is built around catching prospect Jesus Montero, which means that the Mets will need to look elsewhere for pitching.
