Derrek Lee and the Most Notable Braves-Cubs Player Swaps

August 19, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

On Wednesday, the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs completed a deal to send first baseman Derrek Lee to Atlanta for three pitching prospects. The Braves needed a first baseman with some pop to complement Troy Glaus' decision to rehab in the minors and readjust himself to third base.  Lee and Glaus could also platoon, giving Glaus the time to rest his knees and give both guys solid playing time. This move is another in what I have noticed is seemingly a trend in which players who played for the Braves end up playing with the Cubs as well.  Here are some notable ...

Casey Coleman Fails Chicago Cubs Debut in 5-1 Loss To Padres

August 19, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Casey Coleman’s first Major League start is a loss. The 23-year-old right-hander pitched in Thursday’s matinee match in Wrigley Field.  The Chicago Cubs lost 5-1 to the San Diego Padres for their third defeat in a row. Coleman (0-1) only gave the Cubs 4.1 innings in which he was tagged with three earned runs and six hits, striking out one and walking three.  He did not receive any run support from his teammates.  The Cubs only scored one run in their last 19 innings. Coleman gave up two runs in the first.  Will Venable led off the inning with a single to shortstop but ...

Josh Hamilton Is the Reason Chicago Cubs GM Jim Hendry Should Be Fired

August 18, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Spending a week on a cruise ship tends to take you out of the sports loop. That was my situation last week as I tuned into ESPN in my cabin and caught the hosts of Baseball Tonight talking about Texas Ranger's outfielder Josh Hamilton. I didn't catch the beginning, but what I heard was something like, "If Hamilton didn't get messed up with drugs at the beginning of his career, he might be on his way to the Hall of Fame." That brought back some very bad memories for me. The Chicago Cubs had him for a second in 2006 before GM Jim Hendry ...

Chicago Bulls’ Luol Deng Dominating International Play

August 18, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

With the news of Carmelo Anthony wanting out of Denver, many Chicago Bulls fans have willingly offered up Luol Deng and an assortment of players and picks for the Nuggets' superstar. Not so fast. As a member of Great Britain's national team, Deng has quietly put up fantastic numbers as arguably the best player on his squad. Deng put up games of 32 points and nine rebounds, followed by 23 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. Then against Ukraine he posted 28 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Sure, these stats are inflated by a lower level of competition. But what would it say ...

Overachievers? Chicago Bulls Will Be “Big Four” Team in the East

August 18, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Now that free agency has lulled some fans into a snooze, it is time to start looking speculatively at what teams can do this upcoming season.Clearly, the Eastern Conference has taken major strides in becoming a more well-rounded group, and one of those teams prepared to make a jump are the Chicago Bulls.Yes, the Miami "Thrice," Boson Celtics, and Orlando Magic stick out on a level of their own, but it appears Chicago is ready to break down the door and enter among the East's beasts.Despite not having the hopes of teams like Miami (72 wins, really?), there are clearly ...

Derrek Lee Traded to Atlanta Braves

August 18, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The Chicago Cubs are close to completing a trade that will send first baseman Derrek Lee to the Atlanta Braves in what is being described as a "salary dump," according to David Kaplan of CSNChicago. That would imply that the Cubs would receive only salary relief, and not players, in return for Lee, who would have to approve the trade. Sources close to Kaplan say that unlike the proposed trade to the Angels which Lee declined, he would be open to going to Atlanta. It would give Lee a chance to participate in a pennant race and get away from ...

Randy Wells Suffers Another Defeat, Chicago Cubs Lose 1-0 To San Diego

August 18, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Randy Wells is wondering what he needs to do to win a ball game. Chase Headley’s first-inning groundout-RBI produced the only run in the game as the Chicago Cubs lost 1-0 to the San Diego Padres Tuesday night. Wells (5-11), who was only tagged with one run in seven innings, had his best performance in recent outings.  In the month of August, he has conceded three runs in seven innings to the Cincinnati Reds.  He gave up six earned runs each in two different outings.  The right-hander has not won a game since July 23 against the St. Louis Cardinals. Padres starter Jon ...

Chicago Cubs Lose Series Opener 9-5 To San Diego Padres

August 17, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Tonight, it was one of those wild nights when each team's bullpen collapsed. Nine relievers were called in to work when nine out of 14 runs of the game were conceded by the bullpen of either team. The game took three hours and 26 minutes to end and Chicago Cubs lost the battle at home.  They were defeated by the San Diego Padres 9-5 in the first game of the four-game series. Cubs starter Tom Gorzelanny (6-7) took the loss and the first five runs of the Padres.  But it was up to the bullpen to decide the winner of the contest. Gorzelanny allowed ...

TheOutfieldIvy.com Staff NL Predictions: John Mark

August 16, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

NL East: The NL East is a two team race.  The Braves currently hold a two game lead over the Phillies, but I don’t expect that to last for long.  I thought the underachieving Phillies would catch the Braves before Chipper Jones got hurt.  Now the Braves are in big trouble.    The Braves have survived on good pitching.  Only the Padres have given up fewer runs in the NL.  Tim Hudson has returned to his pre-Tommy John days, Tommy Hanson has been solid, Jurrjens is healthy again, and Lowe has been steady.  The bullpen has been lights out, led by Billy ...
