On Wednesday, the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs completed a deal to send first baseman Derrek Lee to Atlanta for three pitching prospects. The Braves needed a first baseman with some pop to complement Troy Glaus' decision to rehab in the minors and readjust himself to third base. Lee and Glaus could also platoon, giving Glaus the time to rest his knees and give both guys solid playing time. The 23-year-old right-hander pitched in Thursday’s matinee match in Wrigley Field. The Chicago Cubs lost 5-1 to the San Diego Padres for their third defeat in a row.
Coleman (0-1) only gave the Cubs 4.1 innings in which he was tagged with three earned runs and six hits, striking out one and walking three. He did not receive any run support from his teammates. The Cubs only scored one run in their last 19 innings.

The Chicago Cubs are close to completing a trade that will send first baseman Derrek Lee to the Atlanta Braves in what is being described as a "salary dump," according to David Kaplan of CSNChicago. That would imply that the Cubs would receive only salary relief, and not players, in return for Lee, who would have to approve the trade. The NL East is a two team race. The Braves currently hold a two game lead over the Phillies, but I don’t expect that to last for long. I thought the underachieving Phillies would catch the Braves before Chipper Jones got hurt. Now the Braves are in big trouble.
