Day by day, the Major League Baseball season gets closer. The Chicago Cubs have had two consecutive disappointing seasons. Now, with a new manager at the helm, the Cubbies are looking to start anew in 2011.Many people are pessimistic about the upcoming season. Even though they may not have reason to be optimistic, I think it's time to be more ambitious. As a result, I have compiled 10 bold predictions for the Cubs' season. Some are bolder than others, but I think all are possible—even though they are not necessarily plausible. Keep in mind, these are BOLD predictions regarding the Cubs. ...
As sure as the ivy grows in Wrigley Field every summer, so do the Chicago Cubs in finding themselves the odd men out in October.
With more than 100 years of misplayed balls and missed home runs, this should be the year it changes. This should be the year they break the "Cubbie" curse and learn the magic of October glory—but they won't.
The Cubs are walking into this season as underdogs with all the right tools. Their lineup still consists of a power-slugging duo manning the No. 3/No. 4 spots, a solid average with explosive speed in the No. 1/No. 2 holes and ...
As spring training is well underway, teams throughout the league have a sense of hope for the upcoming season. Whether it be hope for a title run or just hope for improvement, every club is excited to get the season started.
The Chicago Cubs in particular are coming off a successful winter in which they acquired players such as Carlos Pena, Matt Garza and Kerry Wood. These moves alone have been enough to get Cub fans back in the groove and excited for what's to come in 2011.
However, it isn't strictly fans that are jumping on the Cub bandwagon. Multiple experts have Chicago making the postseason ...
Just like you can count on the swallows coming back to Capistrano, you can count on Cub fans migrating to Arizona during Spring Training to watch their beloved Cubbies. The Cubs have always been the top draw in the Cactus League. Because they were so popular, they actually tried to get a surcharge passed in Arizona on other teams training there to help them build a new compound in Mesa. That failed and now it seems another certainty in life is gone, leaving us with just death and taxes. If recent developments are any indication, it seems Cub fans are ...
Everyone else is plotting out the Cubs everyday lineup and batting order, so I suppose I should get into the act as well.
Based on spring training so far, this looks like Quade’s preferred batting order, at least against right-handers.
Fukudome, RF
Castro, SS
Byrd, CF
Ramirez, 3B
Pena, 1B
Soriano, LF
Soto, C
DeWitt, 2B
Pitcher
I have no problem with the first two slots. Fukudome gets on base, Castro continues to impress. The problems begin with the middle of the order. I don’t care how hot Byrd is in spring training, he is not a No. 3 hitter. He isn’t patient enough and he doesn’t hit for power. Fans ...
With the recent debate about "experts" finally reaching a decision on which Chicago Cubs game Ferris Bueller attended, it's important to also recognize some of the greatest showcases of the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field to appear on the silver screen.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
By far the most intimate portrayal of the inner sanctum of Wrigley Field, Daniel Stern's homage to his beloved Chicago Cubs gives us everything we need in an interesting sports movie. Henry Roovenflavor/Rosinbagger/Rowengartner loves his Cubs but stinks as a little league outfielder. The 12-year-old breaks his arm, and after the tendons heal a little tightly, he ...
We're half way through spring training and already the injury bug has struck a few players, such as Adam Wainwright, Zach Greinke, and even Chase Utley. But not everyone is on the bend thankfully, and some players are even entering the season in the best shape of their lives. This comes as welcome news, especially for teams who are used to playing with a 50/50 squad of "A-team" and "B-team" players, and especially comes as welcome news for a handful of teams who could contend this year, such as Oakland, Chicago (both sides of town), and perhaps even Atlanta.Let's take a look ...
Our 2011 fantasy baseball projections will be released one-by-one until the top 100 players have been revealed. These rankings consider past achievements, current performance and expected future results based on standard 5×5 H2H settings. Since 2004, Aramis Ramirez has averaged 28 HRs, 96 RBI and a .295 batting average per season. That’s including the 80 games he missed in 2009 due to a dislocated shoulder, as well as the thumb, oblique and quad injuries that lingered last season, limiting him to just 124 games while yielding a career-low .241 batting average. Yet, despite his troubles last season, Ramirez’s 25 HRs and 83 ...
They’ve been told they’re cursed. They’ve been told they’re losers. Even random odds should give them a World Series win roughly every 30 years. But now they’re pushing 103 years and with a new owner, manager and renovations at the ball park, are the Cubs really turning it around? They have Mike Quade. He pulled their dismal 51-74 overall record last year to an acceptable 75-87 by the end of the regular season. They’ve even reclaimed their old pitching star Kerry Woods, and the Rickett’s family has had their first full year to prepare for the upcoming season. But is it ...
Like a bat out of hell, Charlie Sheen has become the Buddha for a new age.Spouting deep philosophical banter on a second-by-second basis, he has become our generation's own Gary Busey (if Busey wasn't still kicking and screaming at Donald Trump on the new Celebrity Apprentice). The man who made the "Wild Thing" song popular again and convinced countless of us young baseball players to carve lightning bolts into the back of our heads and wear ridiculous Roy Orbison glasses on the mound has now become a modern Laozi, spitting out the Tao of Sheen without hesitation.Machete in hand, and Tiger's ...
