MLB Rumors: What Chicago Cubs’ Dugout Scuffle Means for Starting Rotation

March 2, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The Chicago Cubs’ dugout was the scene of another intrasquad scuffle today, courtesy of starting pitcher Carlos Silva. Silva, who was shelled for six runs (three earned) in his one-inning start against the Brewers, blew up at his teammates and had to be physically restrained. With the caveat that spring training has a long ways to go yet, this incident could have a substantial effect on the Cubs’ choices for the back of the starting rotation. Silva is one of several Cub hurlers battling for two rotation spots behind Ryan Dempster, Carlos Zambrano and newly-acquired Matt Garza. Recent reports suggest that the competition ...

Chicago Cubs: Projecting Mike Quade’s 2011 Opening Day Lineup

March 2, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The Chicago Cubs open the 2011 regular season on April 1st at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs have a lot of questions to answer before that Friday afternoon, which, knowing Wrigley in April, will presumably be cold and rainy. The team's rotation beyond the top three starters is up for grabs, the bench is unsettled and the bullpen has its own share of competition. In addition to handling those issues, manager Mike Quade must decide who his starters are at second base and in right field. As far as the lineup goes, a couple things are set. Aramis Ramirez is entrenched in ...

It was again a year not to remember for the Chicago Cubs in 2010, as they once again failed to deliver on high expectations. Chicago finished fifth in the NL Central with a record of 75-87. The Cubs also said goodbye to first baseman Derrek Lee, starting pitcher Ted Lilly and infielders Ryan Theriot and Mike ...

How Will Andrew Cashner Fare as a Starter?

As of right now, the only certainties are that Ryan Dempster, Carlos Zambrano and Matt Garza are guaranteed their place in the Chicago Cubs' starting rotation, with Dempster being the Opening Day starter (one of the most overrated things in baseball). With two starting spots being up for grabs, spring training will bring a lot of excitement for how things will shake out come April. Of the competitors, veterans Carlos Silva and Randy Wells have a supposed leg-up, while youngsters Casey Coleman, James Russell, Andrew Cashner and Jeff Samardzija, along with prospect Chris Carpenter, all have a bid in those two spots.  Also, ...

MLB Trade Rumors: 10 Moves to Make the Chicago Cubs a Contender

March 1, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The Chicago Cubs and contender. These are words that haven't gone together that much during the Cubbies' history, although they've had some very good teams. Unfortunately for fans of the North Siders, "next year" hasn't come yet, and the prospects in 2011 aren't overly exciting either for a championship run, although the NL Central could be a wide-open race. But things aren't as bad as they seem in Wrigleyville. Cubs fans will love watching young Starlin Castro develop into a possible star and there are still some good young players in the Chicago system who can make an impact with the Big ...
