Last week I wrote about my hope for the 2011 Cubs. For the first time in a long time, I look at the Cubs organization and see reasons to be optimistic about their short and long-term future. Almost immediately after posting that story to Facebook, I got a message from one of my college buddies—and fellow long-suffering Cubs fan—that was, uh, not so optimistic. He stopped short of calling me a total idiot, but did suggest rather strongly that I needed to immediately go outside, turn around three times and spit. It’s not that he thought I was an idiot ...
In case you have failed to notice, Alfonso Soriano spits more than any other human on the planet. Honestly, he's like a stable llama on Mucinex--it's disgusting. Watch for it, you'll undoubtedly lose your appetite.
But for the first time in a long time, Alfonso Soriano is starting to spit his game in between the chalk lines at Wrigley rather than littering the dugout floor with his own saliva. Through the first four games of the young season, our $136 million man has actually been relatively productive, particularly Monday afternoon in the matinee tilt against ...
Well the game went a lot better than yesterday. Th Chicago Cubs sobered up from their late collapse against the Pirates on Sunday to bad a bounce back win in their series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.Cubs starter Randy Wells smoothed out a shaky start to go six full innings and fanning as many batters. He gave up a sole run which came on a lead off homer by Willie Bloomquist which made it appear as though the Cubbies were in for another long day. After the lead off homerun, Wells went on to only allow five more hits and he walked ...
Randy Wells continued his spring success in his first start of the season, as he kept the Arizona Diamondbacks' hitting at bay while engineering through six innings, giving up just one run on six hits.
After a disappointing weekend against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Chicago Cubs could not afford to start the week on a sour note.
The Diamondbacks struck first in the first inning on a Willie Bloomquist home run.
However, this would be the only run the Diamondbacks would score, as the Cubs fought their way back for a 4-1 victory.
For the fourth day in a row, in what may be ...
Chicago Cubs’ shortstop Starlin Castro is 8-for-13 (.615) with four runs and one RBI through three games this season, and already has the fantasy baseball community buzzing over his potential.
Castro’s 2011 spring totals turned some heads last month, as he displayed surprising power: 66 at-bats, 14 runs, nine XBH (four HRs), 15 RBI, two steals, .348/.386/.621.
Fresh off an impressive rookie season which saw him hit .300 in 463 at-bats, the question must be asked: How good is Starlin Castro?
The Cubs signed the Dominican Republic native at the tender age of 16 in 2006. After holding his own (.305 average) in two seasons of rookie ball, he ...
As a Chicago Cubs fan, there isn't much to be hopeful for after watching the North Siders drop their season opener, their home opener, and their opening series of the season all to the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates. If you're anything like me, you were watching the Cubs and pondering a few critical questions that rose in your mind. For instance, what nationality is Darwin Barney? Is he the kind of guy who fills in the Asian/Pacific Islander bubble during standardized testing questionnaires? I couldn't even make a guess as to what is ...
The Cubs were looking hot, and it looked like they were going to actually pull out a victory and take two of three from the Pirates to start the 2011 season. Then they hit the top of the ninth. It wasn't a convincing day, but the Cubs hung in there, tying the game in the fourth and fifth innings and taking the lead in the sixth. Their young shortstop Starlin Castro, who is only 20, had two triples on the day but was at the wrong end of a crucial play in the ninth. Matt Garza looked impressive in his ...
Cubs nation can finally breathe easier.
After a disappointing loss to the Pirates on Opening Day, the Cubs rallied from a 3-0 deficit to propel them to their first victory on the season.
They say the first win is always the hardest, and today's game was not any exception.
Carlos Zambrano gave up three runs in six innings on five hits including a Garrett Jones home run.
Paul Maholm, who recorded three of his nine victories last season against Chicago, was masterful through 6 2/3 of pitching while giving up just five hits and zero runs.
It appeared the Cubs were on the brink to begin the season 0-2 while trailing ...
Initial thoughts were that Blake DeWitt would open the year as the Chicago Cubs’ starting second baseman, but that turns out not to be the case. While he could get the job somewhere down the line, according to Toni Ginnetti of the Chicago Sun-Times (click here for the article) Cubs manager Mike Quade “expects Barney and Jeff Baker to platoon some depending on the opposing pitcher.”
So far Quade appears to be sticking to his word for a platoon. Barney got the Opening Day start (2-4, 1 R), though it was Baker who started today in Game No. 2.
Baker has been ...
Cubs Nation, breathe easy. Mike Quade sure is.Opening day 2011 is in the books, and on an afternoon that saw the Cubs fall to the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3, I know many die-hard Cubs fans are already coming up with reasons to doubt. Their reasons—taken individually—aren't without merit. The Cubs are still without a strong leadoff hitter that can get on base and manufacture runs. They lack a consistently big bat in the middle of the lineup to drive in runs and scare opposing pitchers. There are concerns with the back-end of their rotation. Stop now? Ok, ok. Here's the thing, though. ...
