With the new management team in place for the Chicago Cubs, I think it's time for a housecleaning of losing traditions from the past. Dallas Green came up with the slogan "Building a New Tradition" when he took over as the GM of the team in the early '80s. It worked for awhile, but he was soon out the door when the Tribune Company decided they really didn't want to win after all if it was going to cost them money. My suggestions won't cost anything, other than ridding the team of the bad karma from the past. First to go ...
Jose Reyes poses an intriguing option for the Cubs.He seems like a natural fit with the direction the Cubs are going in—he is young, quick and talented. A left infield featuring Starlin Castro and Jose Reyes would be one of the most dynamic in baseball. The same two would form a formidable one-two punch at the top of the batting order and would create unbelievable pressure on the basepaths. But there are a few problems with making this move.First, the Cubs would have to move Starlin Castro to third base. Though Castro displays a youthful sloppiness (as his 29 errors last season ...
The Chicago Cubs recently added third base prospect Josh Vitters to their 40-man roster. The former third overall pick from the 2007 MLB amateur draft could finally be looking to make an impact on the team that selected him, and with how things are looking, he very much could be getting that chance.Considering the Cubs lack of depth at third base, especially with the departure of veteran Aramis Ramirez; so the Cubs may be best to go with Vitters. Looking at the rest of the available players, Vitters presents just as much of a risk, but at least he comes with ...
The Chicago Cubs have been making some noise this offseason so far. They have signed on a new Vice President of Baseball Operations in Theo Epstein, GM in Jed Hoyer, and a manager in Dale Sveum. All three have expressed they will do whatever it takes to bring a championship to Chicago. Now I know every new manager, GM, VPBO says that to appease the fans but not every group has already done it once together. Here is a list of five free agents I believe Theo and company will be targeting this offseason. Begin Slideshow
After hearing new Cubs manager Dale Sveum at his press conference on Friday, I'm having second thoughts about my comments about him the other day. There is nothing I hate more than someone who says one thing one day and something else the next, so let me spell it out for you. He still was not my choice. I clearly said I wanted Mike Maddux and would have settled for Sandy Alomar Jr. That being said, I like the way he came across in the interview session. He impressed me with what he had to say, especially about holding players accountable and playing hard. ...
After hiring Dale Sveum as their new manager, the Chicago Cubs now will move on to making offseason player moves. New president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer have stated that other than Starlin Castro, no player is untouchable. That means that many players that were cornerstones at Wrigley Field in 2011 could be gone by the start of 2012. The Cubs have yet to discuss any offers, but with the Cubs having so many holes in their roster, it would not be a surprise if some guys ultimately do get dealt. The Cubs will need to find some major help ...
Dale Sveum hasn't managed a game yet for the Chicago Cubs, but we're already beginning to get an early indication of the kind of manager that he might be.
When asked by a Chicago sports radio station if he would bunt a guy over to third with a man on second and no one out, he said, basically, that "it depends."
Which, on the surface, makes sense. I mean, you can't really answer that question without knowing the situation—what is the score, what inning is it, etc.
Personally, I would never bunt a guy over in that situation and I am surprised that ...
With the hiring of Dale Sveum as manager of the Chicago Cubs, spell checks, along with Major League Baseball's "Hot Stove," have overheated. Free agency has revolved around the two biggest first basemen, Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols, so the question must be raised; could Dale Sveum's hiring give the Cubs the upper hand in acquiring Prince Fielder?Dale Sveum was brought on immediately following Fielder's best slugging season, where he hit 50 home runs and drove in 119 runs, finishing third in Most Valuable Player voting. Allowing a year for Sveum to understand Fielder's tendencies, while also improving the players ...
A couple of days ago I read an article proposing a way to improve the MLB postseason format. It is expected to be a hot topic in the 2011 offseason because of the current collective bargaining agreement expiring after the 2011 season. After reading that article, I thought of my own format. Here is how I would expand the playoff format of MLB. This playoff format would begin in the 2012 MLB season. Currently there are 30 teams in MLB. There are currently three divisions in each league with a total of six ...
Over the years, the Cubs have had nearly 2,000 players take the field for their storied franchise, among them some of the best players to every play the game.Everyone knows the names Ernie Banks, Fergie Jenkins, Gabby Hartnett, Ron Santo, Sammy Sosa and so on. However, for every great player who has been revered in the eyes of history, there are two equally deserving of attention. So here is a look at the All-Underrated Chicago Cubs team, a group of players who have not gotten the respect that they deserve for their contributions on the field. Also, bonus points for whoever can ...
