Just as we all suspected. The Chicago Cubs and Kerry Wood reached an agreement in the minutes before the Cubs Convention's opening ceremonies, and announced the deal to an "insane ovation," according to Dave Kaplan via Twitter. The deal is worth $3 million for one year, with a club option for 2013. Wood posted a 3.35 ERA with 57 strikeouts over 51 innings in 2011.Wood really had us going these past few weeks, leading many to believe that the Philadelphia Phillies or even the Boston Red Sox may be signing him away. It appears that Wood may have been leading them on in ...
When the Chicago Cubs pulled the trigger on a deal sending young pitcher Andrew Cashner to the San Diego Padres for a young first base prospect in Anthony Rizzo, people essentially assumed that Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer were officially taking themselves out of the race for All-Star free agent Prince Fielder.Apparently, we were all wrong.According to Jason Stark of ESPN.com:"One source with ties to the Cubs brass insists the Cubs are NOT totally out on Fielder, despite the Anthony Rizzo trade. His assessment: The Cubs will "be in it till the end—just in case Scott has to do a deal somewhere" ...
Regardless of whether the sexual assault allegations leveled against Starlin Castro are true or not, the Cubs have no choice but to keep him out of the public eye until the matter is resolved. According to CBS Chicago, Castro is being accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Chicago before heading home to the Dominican Republic for the offseason. Sources say she and a friend left the bar at 3 a.m. the following morning and went to the 21-year-old Castro’s apartment on State Street nearby. The woman claimed she passed out at Castro’s apartment and woke up screaming, finding him on top ...

Through and through.According to Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports, Wood is this close to being a Cub for at least one more year:Additionally, Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein spoke openly about signing Wood on Wednesday, and he made no secret of the fact that signing Wood is an easy choice to make.Courtesy of Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com:We said all along we want to get this done. We have a world of respect for Kerry ...
To ask a fanbase that has never experienced a World Series title in its lifetime for patience is a lot like asking a homeless man for a dollar. It just isn't very likely.
Yet that's exactly what the Cubs brain trust is asking you for. And I am here to tell you why you should willingly accept that request.
For far too long, the Cubs have been built on the "win now" promise. That has only resulted in temporary division titles but early playoff exits and lack of sustained success.
Along the way, there have even been many seasons in which the winning ...
When the Chicago Cubs attained pitcher Matt Garza from the Tampa Bay Rays, they gave up a boatload of top prospects. With them looking to make a move for the right-hander, Cubs president Theo Epstein's asking price has been pretty high in order to get back in return what they had lost. Are the Cubs asking for too much, though?Quite possibly. The Cubs have had reason to overvalue Garza, and they have handled the situation as smartly as many had assumed these guys would.Begin Slideshow
According to CSN Chicago's David Kaplan on Twitter and his blog, the Cubs and Tigers are "down the road" in discussions of a trade that would send Matt Garza to the Tigers for a package of top prospects.Presumably, the gem of the offer would be Tigers top prospect Jacob Turner, who would easily become the Cubs' top starting prospect. Turner, who made his MLB debut with the Tigers this season, is considered to have ace potential, something the Cubs desperately lack. Maybe youngster Dillon Maples has it in him, but he's still a few years away, and high school arms ...
The Chicago Cubs have signed left-handed pitcher Paul Maholm, according to Maholm's Twitter feed.Maholm, 29, becomes the third substantial starting pitching acquisition of the new Jed Hoyer and Theo Epstein regime, and could open the door to another, as his arrival may make Matt Garza more available in trade. This is a brilliant move by the Cubs, a bargain-bin signing of a pitcher with elite ground-ball skills (he ranks among the top 10 percent of qualifying hurlers in ground-ball rate since 2008, just ahead of Roy Halladay). He is left-handed, a priority under Epstein and Hoyer as they look to slow down ...
Paul Maholm's Twitter account is aflutter with activity. And all of it points to him joining the Chicago Cubs. "Just wanna say thank u to everyone that has cheered for me during my career as a Pirate. I loved my last six plus years in the city," Maholm tweeted. He followed that with, "I hope to get to continue some things when I visit during the year and start some great things as I start my Cubs career." When asked if he was going to be at Ryan Dempster's charity pizza event on Thursday night he responded, "Don't know yet. Just joined ...
