The Chicago Cubs will trade Alfonso Soriano soon because the team's new front-office team wants to move forward with new players.Soriano was signed to a monumental eight-year deal prior to the 2007 season to be the Cubs' next power-hitting, speedy center fielder. The prospect of that happening was always slim because Soriano's defense was so poor and he was almost immediately moved to left field. More recently, injuries have taken away Soriano's speed. His power remains intact, as evidenced by his 26 home runs and 88 RBI, but his batting average (.244) and on-base percentage (.289) completely disappeared in 2011. ...
A report from NBC 5 Chicago suggests that if the Chicago Cubs undergo a major overhaul of Wrigley Field, they would move their home games to U.S. Cellular Field, the home field of the White Sox.Based on the report, it appears that the process could begin as early as October of this year, continuing on through the 2013 season in preparation for the 2014 season. 2014 is the centennial for Wrigley Field—that's right, it's been 100 years for the Cubs at Wrigley. That's two golden Jubilees, if you know what I mean. But it also raises another interesting idea: The Cubs ...
It was reported last night by many major news sources that Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler, one of the most-coveted free agents left in baseball, had agreed to terms with the Chicago Cubs.
Now David Kaplan of CSN Chicago reports that this is not the case, and that Soler has not agreed in principle to any contract with the Cubs or any other major league team.
In fact, ESPN's Buster Olney tweeted earlier that the New York Yankees have serious interest in the 19-year-old.
The Yankees and Cubs seem to be the two major players in the quest to sign the 6'3", 200-pound outfielder. ...
The Chicago Cubs are an organization that has been dramatically changed in the past few months. Gone are the coaches, executives and star players such as Aramis Ramirez and Sean Marshall. They have all been replaced in hopes of taking the Cubs to unfamiliar territories (otherwise known as the World Series). Theo Epstein has stressed the club is building for the future and most fans believe it will be years before the Cubs are a contender. But what if there is no need to wait?Is it possible the Cubs make the most of 2012?Here are five reasons it isn't entirely impossible Chicago finds ...
Theo Epstein hasn't finished his first offseason in charge of the Chicago Cubs, but that doesn't mean it isn't too early to look towards next year's plans. After all, isn't "next year" what the Cubs are all about? Moves have been made towards next year and beyond already. The Cubs signed David DeJesus, Gerardo Concepcion and Paul Maholm, while also trading away Tyler Colvin and Andrew Cashner in separate deals for Ian Stewart and Anthony Rizzo. The 2013 free-agent class is full of big names that can potentially hit the market. Cole Hamels, Matt Cain, Josh Hamilton, Yadier Molina and ...

The Chicago Cubs have quietly had a very good offseason. Though they passed up on the top-Cuban free agent Yoenis Cespedes, they added the talented pitcher Gerardo Concepcion earlier this month.
On Monday night, they went out and grabbed another future talent, and it has been reported by multiple sources that Jorge Soler is expected to join the Cubs organization in 2012.
Soler, a 19-year-old outfielder, was one of the top-three Cuban free agents of the offseason. He technically can't sign yet because he is waiting for clearance from the MLB, but as soon as he is declared a free agent he will sign with the ...
Following their signing of Gerardo Concepcion, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports that the Cubs are effectively out on Yoenis Cespedes, but willing to spend big on Jorge Soler. The trio of Cuban defectors have riled up a lot of interest. Cespedes's scouting video and World Baseball Classic appearances have given the baseball world much to talk about, as there's a much larger familiarity. A fellow outfielder, Soler has been considered the consolation prize for teams unable to sign Soler.Concepcion, a 19-year-old left-hander, was signed by the Cubs for a reported $7 million, with another potential $1 million in performance bonuses. Last season, ...
The Miami Marlins are the only team that is known to have talked to Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes so far, and while they say they want him, they don't think they have to have him. In other words, if the price is right, "Yeah, we'll take a chance."Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen mentioned on ESPNChicago.com the team sent an entourage to watch him play. While Guillen thought he had some skills, it didn't sound like he came away overly impressed:"We went to the Dominican Republic, myself and 10 guys. He's pretty impressive. They compare this kid with a lot of people. ...
The Chicago Cubs have had an underrated offseason, so how long will it take them to return to contention? The franchise is now on the right track but it will take two to three years for the Cubs to allow their best prospects to mature while adding enough talent to contend for the World Series. To contend for the World Series, a team needs a well-balanced lineup with elite power in the middle, a true leadoff hitter and a mix of left- and right-handed bats. The Cubs moved in the right direction this offseason. They added intriguing left-handed third baseman Ian ...
