After not having been able to catch a Cubs game for about two weeks, I was able to watch the first and last games of their series with Boston. But before this past weekend’s series with the “Sawks,” I heard news of the Cubs signing Cuban defector, Jorge Soler. This caused me to ask myself: “Who exactly is Jorge Soler, and what does this mean for the Cubs' future?”When I began to research Jorge Soler I was first taken aback by his contract. But once I got over the “sticker shock” of 9-year/$30 million contract I had two epiphanies: One, the ...
There is always a lot of buzz that surrounds a player following a draft. How will he perform and where will he begin his professional career are the two main questions. What is becoming the all too common question in recent years is "will the player even sign?" In most cases after a lot of conjecture, the player will ultimately sign. But notable players like Aaron Crow and Tanner Scheppers are guys who waited a year and played in Independent Leagues before being drafted again. Whether they have signed or not, or even thrown a ball this season, here are the Cubs' ...
The Chicago Cubs are committed to rebuilding, and that means that nearly everybody on the roster is a trade candidate as we approach the July 31 trade deadline.Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster and Alfonso Soriano have commanded most of the attention, but a new name has surfaced as a possible trade candidate.Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that rival clubs often ask the Cubs about the availability of Darwin Barney, the team's second baseman. He goes on to say that no clubs have offered Chicago what they feel is a "sufficient amount" for Barney. While the Cubs view him as a starting second ...
There are quite a few losing records in the MLB this year, and as always, those teams will become the biggest "sellers" at the July 31 trade deadline. The Chicago Cubs have plenty of pitching to offer and the San Diego Padres have a few bats; but teams like the Seattle Mariners and Oakland A's have a seven-two offsuit in the hole. Let's take a look at what the MLB's worst teams have to offer.Begin Slideshow
There is no exact formula to knowing when a player is ready to make that leap the major leagues. Often times, a guy may get called up too soon, and sent back to the minors to work on things with the belief that they will be called up again in the near future, while others get called up and never get that chance again. After toiling in the minor leagues for nearly seven seasons, in which he hit over 150 home runs, Cubs first baseman Bryan LaHair garnered nothing more than a cup of tea with the Seattle Mariners in 2008 ...
I'll admit that I started writing this article before Carlos Marmol even took the mound to try to save the game on Tuesday night against the White Sox. But I was absolutely convinced that it would not end well for the Cubs. Look, if the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results, then reinstalling Marmol as the closer is insane my friends. Or so I thought. We have seen, far too often, that Marmol seemingly has lost whatever he once had. He simply should not be closing again. Yet there he was, trying to ...
The season is already a lost cause for any hopes of even mediocrity, but there are still reasons for Cubs fans to be hopeful. Though the team will hover among baseball's worst for much of the year, don't expect them to completely tank for the rest of 2012.There are a lot of aspects the Cubs can improve upon from here on out, and they can finish the season with a handful of positives going into 2013 and the next year in the rebuilding phase. Here are eight reasons the Cubs won't finish at the bottom of the league in 2012.Begin Slideshow
The Dodgers are reportedly seriously interested in adding a starting pitcher and are eyeing Ryan Dempster, who the Cubs are shopping. The Dodgers are in need of a starting pitcher but really don't have the prospects that the Cubs are seeking to improve their pitching. They have a lot of young raw pitchers, but none of them are showing signs of speeding up the pipeline anytime soon. The Cubs are certainly seeking a top prospect or a pair of prospects that will be ready in two years, three years at most. The Cubs have several projects in the minors already, so adding ...
Jorge Soler finished as the biggest loser when the Chicago Cubs won a bidding war to sign the Cuban prospect.Chicago locked up Soler for a nine-year stay in MLB purgatory with a $30 million bounty (via CBS Sports).David Waldstein of the New York Times reports that the Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers all competed in the bidding war. John Heyman adds for CBS that several of these teams bid at least $25 million for the five-tool, 20-year-old lefty. That's an impressive list of suitors. It's just too bad that he chose to marry for money ...
Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum made the most egregious mistake of his young managerial career with his over-the-top support of Alfonso Soriano failing to run out a line drive in the sixth inning of Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox.With runners on first and second and two outs, and the Cubs trailing 3-0 at the time, Soriano hit a line drive to third that Will Middlebrooks dropped and kicked around a bit. Instead of running as hard as he could, Soriano never ran to first and conceded the out to end the inning. The crowd erupted with boos. It's not ...
