Pitchers and catchers have reported for the Chicago Cubs at their training facility in Mesa, AZ. In their second year under the Theo Epstein regime, the Cubs can only get better after suffering through a 101-loss season, their worst since 1966.While expectations remain tempered, the hope is that the Cubs can gradually build a team ready to compete year after year. With that in mind, Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer have been busy putting pieces in place to meet that goal.We will take a look at the latest news concerning the Cubs as they embark upon a new campaign ...
Pitchers and catchers officially began reporting today, meaning the baseball season has officially arrived once again. Spring training is a time where the prospects get a chance to mix it up with established major leaguers and start gaining some very valuable experience. It’s also the best chance for the prospects to start turning some heads and opening some eyes. The Cubs are going to have a couple of position battles this spring, so it will be interesting to see how some of the prospects come into play. Here is a short list of the more exciting Cubs prospects to watch ...
Cubs baseball is just around the corner and spring training will be an opportunity for many players to showcase themselves after a long offseason. The team made several additions to the rotation and bullpen, and aside from Nate Schierholtz, not many moves in the offense department. They are relying on internal options, which is a practical move given the team finished 61-101 last season. There is a lot to be excited about with this Cubs team. While it may seem the Cubs are years off from competing, there are positive developments in the system and the team has shown a willingness to ...
This series will evaluate one team per day, starting on Jan. 23, 2013, and ending on Feb. 22, 2013 (the first game of spring training). It is based on last season's performance, offseason changes since and the author's outlook for the team in 2013. Please keep in mind that rosters can, and will, change before Opening Day. We started in the AL East, worked across to the NL counterpart, and now tackle the Central divisions in alphabetical order. Next up, the Chicago Cubs. 2012 finish: 61-101 (5th place, NL Central) Notable additionsLHP Dontrelle Willis, LHP Hisanori Takahashi, RHP Scott Feldman, RHP Shawn Camp, ...
In baseball there are many lineup differentiations a manager can invent when any and all variables are given consideration; such as how Wrigley Field will play when the wind is blowing out or in, or whether not a ballpark is known as a hitter’s or pitcher’s park. Perhaps their starting pitcher is prone to throw ground balls, so the manager decides to sacrifice offense for a better defensive infielder; or if the pitcher is a fly ball pitcher, the manager can replace however many regulars with those that have better defense and/or can cover more ground. Or maybe on the ...
It’s been far too long, 105 years to be exact, since the Chicago Cubs brought a World Series championship to the Windy City. Of course, the game was different in 1908. Nonetheless, on its third consecutive World Series appearance, Chicago completed the four-game sweep of Detroit en route to claiming its second straight title. Times have changed. The game evolved and the Cubs were left in the dust, still clinging to their early triumphs. Since winning back-to-back titles in 1907-08, the Cubs appeared in the World Series seven times over the next 37 years, losing all of them. In 1910, the ...
In about a week, some of the Cubs' top prospects will be taking the field and mixing it up with the big league squad with the hopes that when spring training breaks, they will trade in their life of riding buses and staying in motels for flying first-class and staying in five-star hotels. The unfortunate reality is that no matter how well some of those top prospects play during spring training, they will find themselves back in the minors. A ton of development is necessary to prepare a ball player for the rigours of playing in the show. There really is no way to determine ...
With the start of spring training looming, Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer and the rest of the Chicago Cubs' front office might as well be lounging around the 19th hole and taking stock of how they did this winter.I'll opine right off the bat (or club, whatever) that they did pretty well. The Cubs were one of the more active teams in the league this offseason, making one major signing (Edwin Jackson) and several smaller signings. Down the road, the smaller signings may turn into trade bait and, in turn, young players to aid the organization's rebuild. But as good as the Cubs' ...
