Clubhouse chemistry seems to be a bit of the "chicken or the egg" debate. Does winning breed good chemistry or does good chemistry lead to winning?
Last year, manager Lou Piniella lamented a lack of chemistry, and many observers pointed the finger at recalcitrant right fielder Milton Bradley for poisoning the well.
Well, right or wrong, Bradley is gone and the trade seems like less of a baseball decision (given Carlos Silva’s awful pitching) and more of an admittance by Cubs GM Jim Hendry that the clubhouse chemistry matters.
According to Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald , Piniella seems to be one ...
Aramis Ramirez has played 150 or more games only once as a Cub. If his shoulder is not 100 percent this season, this statistic will be repeated, and the Cubs offense will struggle.
While that may seem like an all too obvious conclusion, it is the truth. I keep hearing about how "as Soriano goes, so go the Cubs". And while a return to respectability for the Fonz would certainly go a long way to improving the Cubs offense in 2010, I say Rami's contributions will matter even more.
There has been no doubt about what Rami produces while in the lineup, ...
For two teams who have not had to endure arbitration hearings in such a long time, 2010 will be a unique year for both, barring last minute settlements.
The Cubs have not had a hearing during GM Jim Hendry's tenure, and the Brewers have gone 12 years without one. Yet both are lined up to go to arbitration this year—the Cubs with Ryan Theriot and Milwaukee with Corey Hart.
Hart's hearing is scheduled for today. He filed for a $4.8 million salary in 2010, while the Brewers proposed $4.15 million.
As MLB.com's Adam McCalvey points out, "the Brewers won their case against reliever Mike ...
While the Cubs starting eight appear to be set, there is one pressing need in the bullpen left to be filled. Ah, but is that a set-up man, as we've been led to believe, or a true closer?
For if the Cubs can somehow pull off a trade for the San Diego Padres' Heath Bell, they could move Carlos Marmol back where he belongs, as the Cubs' set-up man.
I know it may be somewhat farfetched, but bear with me for a minute. First of all, the Padres know they aren't going anywhere in 2010, so Bell's name has come up as ...
It’s truly happy “Holliday” in St. Louis, though us Cubs fans may not enjoy our New Year's quite as much now.
For the Cubs division challenger and long-time bitter rival St. Louis Cardinals put a dagger into the rest of the division by announcing the team has re-signed free agent outfielder Matt Holliday to a seven-year, $120 million contract.
It's a lot to pay for a player who seemingly had no other suitors, and the Cardinals may regret this deal in the long run. But for the next few seasons, it will really help St. Louis.
Holliday had experienced a slow start in ...
Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports has a new article in which he tries to match up the remaining 10 free agents with the clubs most likely to sign them. Rosenthal has the Cubs nabbing free agent Ben Sheets.
Sheets would be an interesting name if his contract demands aren't too pricey. A one year contract for a low base with incentives would not only make sense, it just might fit into Jim Hendry's budget.
Of Marlon Byrd's $15 million deal, $3 million will count toward this season. That should just about equal this year's return from the cash received as apart of the Milton ...
2009 was a disappointing year, once full of promise, but ended with drear.
Despite three consecutive seasons of winning ball, the Cubs once again failed to win it all.
Still we come out to Wrigley in record numbers, the fans cheering loudly while management slumbers.
Sweet Lou lived up to his name, that he seems so burned out is definitely a shame.
Randy Wells came out of nowhere to surprise, you could see the desire in his eyes.
Once washed up DLee was a sight for sore eyes, despite all the misguided Hoffpauir cries.
Big Z had his meltdowns and this he must face: He’d better ...
The 2000’s were a roller coaster of a decade for Cubs fans. From the excitement of the 2003 playoffs and the 97 win season in 2008, to the disappointment of the Bartman-led collapse and the futile effort against the Dodgers, there were many ups and downs.
While my distinguished colleague Tab Bamford anoints the decade as the worst one ever for Cubs fans, I say that while it was definately gut wrenching and heart breaking, it was certainly notable.
And hey, my friend, it's the Cubs, did you really expect them to win anything of significance?
Overall, the Cubs had a losing ...
I understand that the new Cubs owners have no appetite to increase the payroll for 2010. And, if you look at it reasonably, one can understand.
Yet we all know that the way in which Cubs GM Jim Hendry has spent the money has left a huge void and right now, as currently constructed, the Cubs are not a contending team.
So we have to look for ways to use our assets to decrease payroll and use that to fill our gaps. While some players obviously cannot be moved, like Alfonso Soriano, the Milton Bradley trade saved the team a few ...
