Come to Think of It: Don’t Go Away Mad, Milton Bradley, Just Go Away

August 28, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

“I’m talking about hatred, period. I’m talking about when I go to eat at a restaurant. I’ve got to listen to the waiters badmouthing me at another table, sitting in a restaurant. That’s what I’m talking about. Everything.” You are a tool, Milton Bradley. Fans aren't booing you because you are black; they are booing you because you are BAD. And not bad as in "baaaaad," but bad as in you suck. Sure, you're starting to hit now, but it's too little, too late. When you combine the lousy first half of the season with his crazy antics and his vitriol toward fans, ...

Come To Think of It: The Time Is Now for the Cubs To Prepare for 2010

August 26, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

With this season all but over for the Cubs, it's time to start making some lineup changes and begin preparing for next season. It is never too early, especially with such a mess on our hands.   We now know with some certainty that both Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella will return next season. Despite my well-documented disapproval of Hendry's resume to date, it really doesn't matter because any GM who walked into this stench would have his hands tied by the same impossible-to-move long-term contracts.   As for Lou, I still wouldn't be entirely shocked if he walked away, but he has made ...

Come to Think of It: Five Ways the Cubs Can Build a Winner in 2010 and Beyond

August 25, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Amid Lou Piniella’s recent proclamation that, despite reports to the contrary, he was planning on returning for the 2010 season, there is this little thing called expectations gnawing at Jim Hendry and the Cubs.   While Hendry has certainly messed things up, and Lou seems to be winding down a successful career, they deserve one more shot at bringing a winner to the loyal Cubs fans, who deserve so much more than we've been getting.   Sure, the sale of the team to the Ricketts family, even when finalized, may provide some stability for the franchise. Yet even when fully approved and finalized, don’t ...

Come To Think Of It: There’s No Crying In Cubs Baseball

August 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

"Are you crying? Are you crying? ARE YOU CRYING? There's no crying! THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!" That famous line from the movie A League of Their Own notwithstanding, there are plenty of Cubs fans crying over the team's August meltdown, which has left them pretty much all but dead for 2009. Well, maybe not crying literally, but certainly shocked, frustrated, disappointed, angry, sad - you name it, Cubs fans feel it. But not me. Nope. I am fine. Not because I don't care; hey, there is no one who wants to see the Cubs win the World Series more than ...

Come to Think of It: Should the Cubs Move Carlos Zambrano?

August 19, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

In a perfect world, the Cubs could retain Carlos Zambrano and accept him as he is, warts and all. After all, he is a solid starter with great stuff when he is healthy and his mind is right.   But that utopia doesn’t exist, Cubs fans. The Cubs world is clouded by long-term, high priced contracts that will tie the hands of any GM who the Rickets family might choose to replace Jim Hendry after the season.   Even if Hendry stays, he has to admit that this club needs to make some changes, and that will be extremely challenging unless they can free ...

Come To Think of It: Cubs’ Schedule Going Forward Not As Easy As It Looks

August 16, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Well, if you can't beat winning teams, at least beat up on the sub-.500 teams. While that's not necessarily a recipe for success in the playoffs, it just may be a path to get there.   Cubs Schedule It is with this thought in mind that I look at the remaining Cubs schedule and notice that, of the 47 games left, 28 are against opponents with losing records, only 12 are against teams with winning records, and seven are against a team right at .500. As the Cubs have shown in their current series against the woeful Pirates, that is a good thing. Actually, ...

Come to Think of It: Should the Cubs Consider Billy Wagner?

August 14, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Cubs are struggling in so many facets of their game that it is difficult to target the one area that needs the most help.   But the recent struggles of Kevin Gregg, combined with the wildness of Carlos Marmol all season, is definitely right up there among the concerns.   Coincidentally, the Mets are getting set to activate Billy Wagner from the disabled list less than a year after undergoing Tommy John surgery. His contract is up at the end of the year (with a $1 million buyout for 2010), so the Mets are expected to shop Wagner.   Wagner is said to have been ...

Come To Think Of It: Cubs Are “Seriously” Bad Right Now

August 13, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

To show you how bad things have become with the Cubs, the AM/PM "Too Much Good Stuff" Player of the Game on Wednesday night was Sean Marshall. Seriously. Despite allowing five runs and three walks in just over three innings of work, this high honor was bestowed upon Marshall because, as Bob Brenly pointed out, "he gave Lou's beleaguered bullpen three much needed innings." Seriously. Aaron Heilman allowed no hits in 1.1 innings of work. So what does that make him? Player of the decade? No, all this outing for Heilman shows is that even a blind squirrel will find an acorn now ...

Come to Think of It: Something Old, Something New, Someone Will Be Blue

August 12, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Wednesday night in Wrigley Field, the Cubs and Phillies will match up in the second game of the three game set with opposites on the mound. It's a presentation of the "Old Man and the Sea", only there are "sharks" in this sea.  Yes, the "Shark", Jeff Samardzija, at the tender age of 24, makes his first career start for the Cubs tonight. Meanwhile, Pedro Martinez makes his season debut for the Phils. At 37, Martinez is in the latter stages of what may be a Hall of Fame career. Despite the age difference, there are some similarities between Pedro and Jeff. Like Martinez ...

Come To Think of It: Things to Do In Denver When You’re Dead

August 11, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

"I called up my friend LeRoy on the phone. I said, "Buddy, I'm afraid to be alone. "I got some weird ideas in my head." About things to do in Denver when you're dead"—Warren Zevon.                                                     Well, I certainly hope that the Cubs found something to do during their four game series against the Rockies, because they sure looked dead on the field. Except for the one game they won, the Cubs couldn't hit with RISP; couldn't pitch, couldn't run and couldn't play defense. But other than that, how did you like the play Mrs. Lincoln? This should hardly come as a surprise. ...
