For the foreseeable future, the Chicago Cubs have become the organization’s AAAA affiliate. AAAA Chicago: Where those believed too good for AAA, or those who require major league level instruction to cure their minor league woes, go to develop into the future of the club. It has been a little over a week since the Cubs called up both the highly regarded Brett Jackson—ranked as the Cubs No. 1 prospect by both Baseball Prospectus and Baseball America—and Josh Vitters, also a top 10 Cubs prospects. With a little over a week’s worth of playing time, it seems logical to declare ...
There was a comment left on one of my previous articles from a fan voicing his frustration with what Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer had done to the club thus far in their short amount of time at the helm of the Chicago Cubs. It was not the first time that sentiment had been shared with me. In past postings I have let it be known I am a proponent of patience regarding the new administration. Maybe it is being a Cubs fan for so long that has instilled this principle within me—or maybe it is an irrational loyalty to ...
It’s difficult to say whether or not the trades the Cubs made before the July 31 deadline were pass or fail. With that being said, it may be difficult but it is not impossible. Each trade made comes with its own merits as well as deficiencies. Some trades might prove to work out in Chicago’s favor, and some may have Epstein and Hoyer wiping egg off of their faces. To calculate whether the Cubbies hit a home run with their trades or struck out looking, each deadline deal must be analyzed.Begin Slideshow
As much as I would like the Cubs to keep Matt Garza and sign him to an extension—as some reports do have the Cubs considering—it is probable he will be dealt before the deadline.
With so many suitors for the services of Ryan Dempster, stretching coasts from the L.A. Dodgers to the Washington Nationals, interest in Garza has not yet spiked. One possible reason is that Garza's move will most likely come after the Ryan Dempster trade saga concludes, as ESPN’s Buster Olney reported on Friday morning’s edition of ESPN’s Mike & Mike in the Morning radio show, a report Jayson ...
After not having been able to catch a Cubs game for about two weeks, I was able to watch the first and last games of their series with Boston. But before this past weekend’s series with the “Sawks,” I heard news of the Cubs signing Cuban defector, Jorge Soler. This caused me to ask myself: “Who exactly is Jorge Soler, and what does this mean for the Cubs' future?”When I began to research Jorge Soler I was first taken aback by his contract. But once I got over the “sticker shock” of 9-year/$30 million contract I had two epiphanies: One, the ...
When Epstein was hired as president of baseball operations for the Cubs, he eloquently and adequately laid out his plan for the Chicago Cubs. He stated the process would encompass an entire organizational change. He emphasized a new way of thinking and playing a new brand of baseball. A new GM, manager and a new way of building a team were to follow. Out was the old way of relying on the long ball to score runs and win games. In was the new way of small ball—getting runners on base then utilizing speed and smart, aggressive baserunning with sound ...
Sadly, the could-have-been storybook career of Kerry Wood has come to an end.
It concluded the exact opposite way it began.
We all remember his phenomenal 20-strikeout game against the Houston Astros and the Killer B’s. He displayed a right arm that rightfully earned him the moniker of the next Roger Clemens, a right arm that was supposed to have pitched the Cubs deep into the playoffs.
Regretfully, it never came to be. After missing the last month of the 1998 season, he pitched in only one playoff game against the Atlanta Braves, in which he lost the game and the Cubs lost ...
I like Bryan LaHair and would not mind if the Cubs decided to keep him. But would the Cubs deciding to keep him delay Anthony Rizzo’s call-up?I believe, yes. A prospect like Rizzo deserves to play every day, not sparingly. We all know when Rizzo is called up he will be the Cubs' first baseman. That leaves LaHair as the odd man out– or the even man out since he would be option No. 2 of 2.If both Rizzo and LaHair are on the big league roster together, then one of them will have to change positions. That would most likely be ...
Frank Sinatra released a song in 1966 that can summarize multiple Cubs seasons. The song title also gives eloquent reason for the Cubs to trade some players now rather than waiting until the July trade deadline.
The song? “That’s Life.”
There is a line from that song which could define the predicament the Cubs are currently in: riding high in April; shot down in May.
We have all seen the surprise starts to the season by both Bryan LaHair and Ryan Dempster, both playing at a level which few believe they can sustain for very long—riding high in April. Therefore, the Cubs would be ...
With the nefarious era of Carlos Marmol as the closer coming to an end to the relief of Cubs fans everywhere, there lies another glaring hole the new regime will have to patch in their efforts to achieve organizational goals. For the forthcoming season, the Cubs have decided to split the role between James Russell and hot prospect, Rafael Dolis.Whether or not one of these two can win the role and cement himself as the closer of the future remains to be seen. But, do the Cubs have another possible solution for the future closer role in the bullpen? When the Cubs traded Marlon Byrd ...
