A magical season on the North Side of Chicago hit another high point Tuesday when ace Jake Arrieta threw a complete-game shutout in the Chicago Cubs' 4-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Arrieta became the first pitcher in the major leagues to reach the 20-win plateau and trimmed the Cubs' magic number to reach the postseason to three.
The right-hander struck out 11 hitters and lowered his ERA to a sparkling 1.88 in a potential Cy Young campaign that already includes a no-hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers in August.
The Chicago Tribune shared a photo of the triumphant Arrieta celebrating with his ...
Chicago Cubs star Kyle Schwarber returned to the lineup on Sept. 9, after dealing with sore ribs which had kept him out of the lineup since Sept. 2.
He fully joined the team after the All-Star break and immediately made Chicago a much more formidable offense. Schwarber hits for average, but he also provides another power threat alongside Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo.
What’s more, his ability to play catcher or corner outfielder allows Maddon to mix and match the lineups based on the opposing pitcher.
Levine described how his value goes beyond his production because he takes pressure off the other youngsters as well:
While fellow rookies ...
The Chicago Cubs completed a critical four-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants on Sunday afternoon, but baseball took a backseat in the game's aftermath.
According to Giants beat reporter Andrew Baggarly, there was a bomb threat at Wrigley Field following the contest. He provided more context with a quote from a police officer and described the scene:
Carrie Muskat of MLB.com and John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle shared pictures of the police presence around the iconic stadium, while Paul Skrbina of the Chicago Tribune passed along the reason the press was asked to leave the building:
Fortunately, the ...
The Chicago Cubs are officially in the clear after Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that an investigation found no evidence of tampering in the hiring of manager Joe Maddon this past offseason.
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com passed along the good news for the Cubs, while MLB Communications shared a statement from the league:
Comcast SportsNet Chicago's Patrick Mooney reported Cubs executives gave their phones and laptops to investigators as part of the investigation. Mooney also provided comments from Cubs GM Jed Hoyer:
The Cubs hired Maddon about a week after he resigned from the Tampa Bay Rays' managing job. Maddon had an opt-out ...
Good luck sleeping tonight, Chicago Cubs fans.
The day the entire North Side of Chicago has been breathlessly waiting for will arrive Friday, as the team will call up prospect Kris Bryant from Triple-A Iowa to join the Cubs at Wrigley Field against the San Diego Padres.
Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago broke the news Thursday night and also noted that Bryant will take third baseman Mike Olt’s spot on the roster because Olt is headed to the disabled list. Olt was hit on the wrist by a pitch Saturday and has taken just two at-bats since.
Bryant took to Twitter to announce ...
Get your “Lovable Losers” jokes in now, because the Chicago Cubs have an ace up their sleeve who could make them a contender in the National League Central for the 2015 season and years to come: slugging third baseman Kris Bryant.
Bryant is the next great hope on the North Side of Chicago, and for good reason.
Victor Mather of The New York Times passed along Bryant’s eye-popping numbers from the last couple of seasons:
In two years of minor league play for six teams at every level from rookie league to Class AAA, Bryant amassed 740 plate appearances, maybe 10 percent more ...
Updates from Wednesday, Aug. 27
The Chicago Cubs confirmed Jorge Soler's major league debut on Wednesday:
Original Text
Chicago Cubs fans have spent their entire lives saying “wait ’til next year,” but next year feels closer than it ever has recently.
Jorge Soler is the latest highly regarded prospect in the Chicago system to get the major league call-up, as David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com first reported and Carrie Muskat of Cubs.com confirmed:
Soler was pulled from Monday's Triple-A game after he clubbed a three-run home run. He signed a nine-year, $30 million contract with the Cubs in 2012 after defecting from Cuba in 2011 and ...
Fair warning—if you are a player on the Chicago Cubs who is not named Anthony Rizzo, you may very well get traded this season. Just ask Jeff Samardzija, Darwin Barney and Jason Hammel.
The Cubs clearly aren’t going to compete for a postseason berth down the stretch in 2014, and the playoffs in 2015 probably aren’t going to happen either. However, Chicago is loaded with young and talented prospects, including Kris Bryant, Addison Russell and Javier Baez, and counts Rizzo and Starlin Castro as potential franchise cornerstones.
Cubs fans may always say “wait ’til next year,” but for once it may just ...
