According to a number of reports, the Chicago Cubs have dealt Jake Fox and Aaron Miles to the Oakland A's for reliever Jeff Gray and minor-leaguers Ronny Morla and Matt Spencer.
Gray, 28, appeared in 24 games last season, where he had a 3.76 ERA. He had a 1.29 WHIP as well.
Spencer, a left handed hitting outfielder who turns 24 in January, split last year between High A and AA ball last year. He combined to bat .289 with 19 home runs and 91 RBI in 123 games. The Arizona State product also had a .844 OPS.
Morla, 21, played pitched in only 17 games, going ...
TBS announced on Monday that they had parted ways with baseball play-by-play announcer Chip Caray.
Sorry Kleenex, but my single tear won't help your stock price.
Caray, who was better known for the full families of birds living in his eyebrows and his last name than his ability to call a baseball game has never distinguished himself as the legend in the booth that his grandfather, Harry, or father, Skip, would make you think.
To the contrary, Caray's "highlight" reel from this year's postseason has made every sports talk radio station's blooper feed this year. From calling a ground ball a line drive ...
He won't turn 26 until January, but Josh Johnson might be one of the better pitchers to become available this winter.
Johnson stands to receive a substantial raise from his 2009 salary of $1.4 million after posting a 15-5 record with 191 strikeouts in 209 innings pitched. Standing 6-7 and weighing 240 pounds, Johnson is physically intimidating and backs it up with phenomenal stuff.
Because of the potential raise he'll get in arbitration this year, there have been rumors that the Marlins will look to deal their young ace either this winter or early in the 2010 season. If Johnson is on ...
All is quiet on the northern front in Chicago baseball so far this winter.
Which is odd, because Jim Hendry's last few winters have been highlighted by more big game hunting than a weekend with Ted Nugent.
When a guy's resume includes bringing in names like Alfonso Soriano, Ted Lilly, Kosuke Fukudome and Milton Bradley, and when you consider how public Hendry's courtship of each player was, the fact that there hasn't been much of a peep from Hendry so far in November is intriguing to say the least.
Yes, he traded Aaron Heilman to Arizona. And yes, he signed John Grabow to ...
It's closing in on Thanksgiving and baseball circles are starting to heat up with discussion about players moving from one city to another.
The wonderful part of being a fan at this time of year is the speculation that comes with rumors, whispers, and just throwing junk at the wall to see what sticks.
In the spirit of discussion, I present to you an idea for discussion: the Cubs should explore trading third baseman Aramis Ramirez to the Phillies.
First, let's walk through the foundation of why this deal would even be a consideration for either side.
From the Phillies perspective, this could be ...
Not sure if anyone read the latest foot-in-mouth interview from Chicago's North Side, but this time it isn't one of the usual suspects.
No, it wasn't Milton Bradley talking about how racist the fans were. And it wasn't Geovany Soto talking about the proper way to pack a bong during the World Baseball Classic.
This time, it was closer-to-be Carlos Marmol. And he was jumping all over the hot stove.
Marmol first stated the obvious, telling the AP that the Cubs plan to use him as their closer in 2010. While logic hasn't always been the Cubs' operating philosophy, it appears it will ...
In a move that restores all hope to Chicago Cubs fans, GM Jim Hendry found someone dumber than himself and made a trade.
The Cubs dealt Aaron "The Gas Can" Heilman to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday for minor leaguers Ryne White and Scott...who cares. Heilman's gone, people! Party!
In a related story, the bag of balls that had been rumored to be dealt to Chicago for Heilman is relieved to be staying in Arizona for the winter.Read more Chicago Cubs news on BleacherReport.com
I was wandering around various baseball sites today, and came across a thought that honestly made me laugh when I first read it.
"[The Cubs] have the finances... have a chance to win, which is what [Roy] Halladay will certainly require, and while the Cubs' farm system isn't atop the league right now, there are a few intriguing talents that could fill out a package for Halladay."
That's on ESPN.com's Rumor Mill. I've read a couple other places that the Cubs might be a "darkhorse" candidate to make a splash for the Blue Jays' ace.
Wow. And I thought the only rumors "coming out of ...
The Atlanta Braves and starting pitcher Tim Hudson agreed to a three-year, $28 million contract extension on Thursday.
Hudson originally joined the Braves in a trade in December of 2005, and signed a four-year, $47 million extension that would take him from 2006 through this past season.
But Tommy John Surgery derailed the Braves' plans for him to be their ace in 2008 and 2009, so the team had to go shopping last winter. They signed Derek Lowe to a four-year, $60 million contract and traded a handful of nice prospects to the White Sox for Jaview Vazquez to bolster their rotation.
Hudson ...
It's the middle of November, so there's a ton of speculation flying around the web about baseball players moving addresses before the 2010 season.
For teams like the disappointing Chicago Cubs, the final out of the World Series means the beginning of a new hope. But, this winter, that hope needs to be tempered with a strong dose of reality.
There are some writers on Bleacher Report that think names like John Smoltz and Nick Johnson would make sense for the Cubs this winter. Both of those ideas qualify more as stand-up material than baseball rumors; make sure you take those out ...
