News: Chicago Cubs Sign Hitting Coach Rudy Jaramillo

October 21, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

It's official. The quick courtship of Rudy Jaramillo by the Chicago Cubs added up to a three-year deal worth reportedly $800,000 per season on Wednesday morning. The salary makes Jaramillo the highest paid coach in baseball. Jaramillo comes to Chicago with an impressive resume, having coached 17 Silver Slugger Award winners in 10 seasons. He is considered one of the most respected coaches in the game. Unfortunately for the Cubs, the hitting coach can't keep the team healthy or prescribe something to diffuse Milton Bradley. Those were the issues that plagued the Cubs in 2009, when they fired two hitting coaches as scapegoats ...

Chicago Cubs: Something For Fans To Watch This October

October 16, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

It's the middle October, which means fans of the Chicago Cubs have followed their annual calendar and started investing their time in football and hockey about three weeks ago. But this year, there's some baseball of interest being played. In Arizona. The Arizona Fall League is under way, and Cubs fans should at least check in to see how the "future" of the franchise is doing. Third base prospect Josh Vitters, regarded by many as the jewel of the Cubs' system, is playing for the Mesa Solar Sox. It's hard to get excited about Vitters right now for many Cubs fans for a ...

Is the Chicago Cubs’ Interest in Rudy Jaramillo Milton Bradley-Related?

October 15, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Rumors are swirling around Chicago that the Cubs, who fired two hitting coaches during the 2009 season, have strong interest in former Texas Rangers coach Rudy Jaramillo. Jaramillo's resume stands on its own merits. During his 10-year tenure in Texas, 17 Rangers won Silver Slugger Awards. He gets a lot of the credit for the Rangers being an offensive powerhouse over the last decade. But my interest in this rumor is deeper than a great hitting coach being available... Could the Cubs' interest in Jaramillo be directly tied to their inability to unload disgruntled outfielder Milton Bradley? And, if Jaramillo does indeed come ...

If Naivete Is Bliss, Is Wrigley Field Heaven?

October 13, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Disclaimer: I am an enormous Cubs fan who still spends months dreaming about Opening Day at Wrigley Field. I love the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs have an incredible fan base, one that many teams would give their best player to have at any home game.  No matter the weather or the team's record, over the last 15 years the team has packed the house almost every single day. But I have a beef with Cubs' Nation. There are a lot of Cubs fans that love the game of baseball. There are a lot of Cubs fans that love the idea of being Cubs fans ...

Cubs Fans: Did You Watch John Lackey Last Night?

October 9, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Last night the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox to begin their Divisional Series in California. Starting the game for the Angels was their ace, John Lackey, who happens to be a free agent in five weeks. He threw 7.1 scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and walking one while striking out four. He threw 113 pitches in the victory. Lackey ended the season 11-8 with a 3.83 ERA despite missing time because of injury. He's been at the front of a competitive Angels rotation for most of this decade, and would look fabulous in the Cubs' pinstripes next year. At ...

Chicago Cubs Have a Hard-en Decision to Make

October 8, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Over the coming weeks, there will be a number of tough decisions made on the north side of Chicago. Now that it appears the ownership issue will be settled soon, the business of baseball can begin again. One decision that needs to be made is regarding free agent pitcher Rich Harden. Harden, who was acquired at the trade deadline in a move that directly countered the Milwaukee Brewers' acquisition of CC Sabathia, might have been the best Cubs starter down the stretch this past season. Now a free agent, Harden presents an intriguing set of issues to Cubs management. His performance in ...

News: Sale of Chicago Cubs Approved by MLB

October 6, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

News on Tuesday afternoon is that Major League Baseball has approved the sale of the Chicago Cubs to the Ricketts Family. Much like the 2009 season, a process that took way too long and left a lot to be desired is now finished. The Cubs have a new owner with a new vision (assuming the Tribune Company ever had a vision), and a new set of expectations for the 101-year loser. The leader of the group, Tom Ricketts, has a story that's almost an urban legend in Chicago. He's a Cubs fan who used to live across the street from Wrigley Field ...

Chicago Cubs: Season Ends, Blaming Begins

October 5, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

On Sunday, the Chicago Cubs lost for the last time in 2009. Then they started lining up scapegoats. First to board the no-expenses paid bus out of Chicago is hitting coach Von Joshua. Of course, he's the second hitting coach to be blamed for the disappointment this year; Gerald Perry was thrown under the bus a couple months ago. Both Perry and Joshua were professionals about being the person fired for GM Jim Hendry's failures last winter. As any fan knows, it's the hitting coach's fault that Aaron Miles isn't good and Milton Bradley's a clubhouse cancer. But reality for Cubs fans on this cool, ...

Tab’s Official Mea Culpa To Chicago’s Derrek Lee

September 24, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

I like to talk and write about baseball. I love it. That passion is what helped me become a Featured Columnist covering the Chicago Cubs for Bleacher Report. I just adore the game and the Cubs. One of the perks of saying and writing a lot is that there are times when I can admit to being right and gloat about correctly predicting some things. My cap is tipped to you, Milton Bradley, for making my stating the obvious (he's a trainwreck and wouldn't last more than a year in Chicago) look like genius. There is, however, the other side of the coin. ...
