On the WGN 720 postgame show tonight, Jill (I don’t know her last name) relayed the bewildering news that Carlos Zambrano, after a crushing loss which included being tossed for throwing at Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones, packed up his belongings and told the trainer on his way out that he was retiring. Jill later relayed that they would follow the story tonight and into tomorrow, and that Mike Quade was “fuming.” Is this real, or simply more of Big Z’s usual antics? For anyone in Cub-land who lives in a cave or doesn’t have electricity, the Cubs announced Tuesday that Mike Quade would indeed be retaining his job as manager. Not, as many believed, losing it to HOF 2B Ryne Sandberg.
Many Cubs fans wanted an answer sooner rather than later, but as always, Cubs fans should be careful what they wish for.
