Soler Facing Considerable Absence
Tuesday, June 7
The Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales added that Soler will "likely" be sidelined for more than 15 days, though the extent of the strain has not been disclosed.
Soler suffered the injury during Monday's 6-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the third inning while running out a single he hit down the left field line.
If Gonzales' speculation is correct, this will be another large blow to the Cubs outfield, ...
Chicago Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta got a taste of defeat Sunday for the first time in more than 10 months.
Thanks to the Cubs' 3-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner suffered his first loss since July 25, 2015, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Arrieta struck out 12 in five innings of work while allowing three earned runs at Wrigley Field.
Arrieta's last loss was at home against the Philadelphia Phillies. Cole Hamels threw a no-hitter that day to claim the 5-0 victory against Chicago before being traded to the Texas Rangers four days later.
Since that loss, Arrieta seemed unstoppable. He ...
The Chicago Cubs are the best team in baseball.
That's true on the stat sheet, where they lead the solar system with a plus-129 run differential. And it's true in the standings, where Chicago paces the National League Central, and every other team in every other division, with a 36-15 record.
So it stands to reason the Cubs would be well-represented in the 2016 MLB All-Star Game.
And they are, at least in the first round of voting results released Wednesday.
Boy, are they.
A whopping five Chicago players lead at their respective positions: first baseman Anthony Rizzo, second baseman Ben Zobrist, shortstop Addison Russell, ...
The Chicago Cubs have finally tasted defeat when Jake Arrieta takes the mound, as the Los Angeles Dodgers' 5-0 victory Tuesday night at Wrigley Field snapped the team's 23-game winning streak with the 30-year-old ace starting.
Arrieta remains undefeated on the year at 9-0, however. Clayton Richard was credited with the loss.
Entering Tuesday, Arrieta and the Cubs were tied for the longest win streak in major league history with Kris Medlen and the Atlanta Braves, who won 23 straight games in which he started from 2010 to 2012, per the Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN Stats & Info).
Using data from Elias, ...
Shane Victorino's MLB career looks to be in serious jeopardy, as the Chicago Cubs released the 35-year-old outfielder Monday.
Victorino never made it to the majors this season. He was in Triple-A Iowa at the time of his release, per Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times:
Victorino signed with the club on February 26 in hopes of winning one more championship before the sun set on his career, which he told MLB.com's Carrie Muskat at the time of the signing.
"It's not about playing time, it's not about where things are, it's about winning," Victorino said. "Obviously, for me, I have to win my job on ...
CHICAGO — "Antonio!"
Anthony Rizzo, padding across the carpet in the Chicago Cubs' home clubhouse three hours before game time, grins as he moves toward Grandpa Rossy, whose suddenly thick Italian accent works nicely with his graying beard and warm smile.
"Antonio!"
They embrace. This is their daily greeting. David Ross, 39, retiring after this year and the glue of a team tighter than the Wrigley Field seats, stresses the importance of saying hello to everybody each day.
"You've gotta invest in people, right?" Ross says. "You're not going to be very good if you don't invest in human beings. I think that's really ...

No team is playing better baseball right now than the San Francisco Giants (25-18), who have won eight games in a row, allowing three runs or fewer in their last seven and only one run in four straight.
Regardless, the visiting Chicago Cubs (28-11) are listed as -200 betting favorites (wager $200 to win $100) for Friday’s series opener at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark behind unbeaten ace Jake Arrieta (7-0, 1.29 ERA).
The Giants and Cubs were the two preseason favorites to win the National League pennant. After a slow start, San Francisco is finally living up to those high expectations, ...
The Chicago Cubs reached an agreement Tuesday with veteran relief pitcher Joe Nathan on a major league contract for the rest of the 2016 season.
The Cubs officially announced the signing and confirmed Nathan would be placed on the 60-day disabled list as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery performed in April 2015. Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported the deal includes a team option for 2017 that can turn into a mutual option based on performance. Heyman added Nathan can make up to $2.4 million in incentives this season and up to $4.6 million next season.
It's a ...
Chicago Cubs ace Jake Arrieta has been the hottest pitcher on the planet since the beginning of last season.
Once a little-known back-end starter with the Baltimore Orioles, Arrieta was dealt in 2013 to Chicago, where he transformed into a Cy Young Award winner and one of the most unhittable pitchers the game has seen in this millennium.
Arrieta is signed with the Cubs only through 2017, though, and is making $10.7 million this season preceding a year of arbitration, per Spotrac. That means he is poised to make some big bucks, whether it be through a long-term contact extension with the ...
