Things are getting heated in the National League Central, and it's not just in the standings, either. Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon went off on the St. Louis Cardinals, comparing their actions to those of fictional mobster Tony Soprano.Maddon's tirade was sparked by Cardinals reliever Matt Belisle hitting Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo during Chicago's 8-3 victory Friday. Chicago believes Belisle did so intentionally as a response to Dan Haren hitting St. Louis slugger Matt Holliday in the head during the fifth inning. Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com was there for Maddon's lecture after the game."I don't know who put out the hit," ...
If the second game of the Chicago Cubs-Pittsburgh Pirates doubleheader Tuesday was a preview of the National League Wild Card Game, the Cubs will take it and smile.
Chicago got timely hits—including a two-out RBI single off Anthony Rizzo's bat and an RBI double from Dexter Fowler—and most of all a shutdown pitching performance by Jon Lester, who allowed one run, scattered five hits and struck out nine while twirling a complete game in the 2-1 victory.
But wait a minute, you may be asking: If that was a preview of the Wild Card Game, why was Lester on the hill? Surely if ...
Chicago Cubs star Kyle Schwarber returned to the lineup on Sept. 9, after dealing with sore ribs which had kept him out of the lineup since Sept. 2.
He fully joined the team after the All-Star break and immediately made Chicago a much more formidable offense. Schwarber hits for average, but he also provides another power threat alongside Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo.
What’s more, his ability to play catcher or corner outfielder allows Maddon to mix and match the lineups based on the opposing pitcher.
Levine described how his value goes beyond his production because he takes pressure off the other youngsters as well:
While fellow rookies ...
The Chicago Cubs shored up their outfield Monday with the addition of Austin Jackson, confirmed the team.
According to CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman, the Seattle Mariners will receive a player to be named later and the Cubs' last international slot, which equates to $211,000, per Drayer.
In 445 plate appearances for the Mariners, Jackson is hitting .272 with a .312 on-base percentage and a .387 slugging percentage. He also has eight home runs, 38 runs batted in and 15 stolen bases.
Fox Sports' Jon Morosi reported last week Jackson cleared waivers but that teams remained interested in working out a trade for the 28-year-old. ...
LOS ANGELES — Jake Arrieta’s solidification came loud, clear and dominant.
No-hitters tend to do that. But when they do it for an ace on the rise who's on a team thinking about the World Series, they do so with more authority.
Already in the midst of greatness this season, the Chicago Cubs’ right-hander fired the game of his life Sunday night at Dodger Stadium, striking out 12 on his way to a no-hitter and a 2-0 Cubs win.
His ball danced. It ducked. It shimmied. It disappeared. And there was almost nothing the Dodgers could do about it except rely on a scorekeeper’s ...
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jake Arrieta is no stranger to flirting with no-hitters, losing two in the eighth inning last season. On Sunday night, he finished the job, holding the Los Angeles Dodgers hitless in a 2-0 victory.
Arrieta struck out 12 at Dodger Stadium, including the final three batters of the night. The lone blemish on his pitching line was a walk to Jimmy Rollins in the bottom of the sixth. Second baseman Starlin Castro had previously committed an error in the bottom of the third that wiped out any shot of a perfect game, though.
The only support for Arrieta came ...
Major League Baseball and '90s sitcoms go together like peanut butter and jelly, or something like that.Presumably drawing inspiration from the San Francisco Giants' rendition of the Full House theme song and another compilation of the Family Matters intro, starring the Pittsburgh Pirates, one fan mashed the Perfect Strangers opening to feature the Chicago Cubs.Similar to the Pirates installment, the team didn't shoot actual footage special to the video like the Giants did, since it was also fan-made. But it is regionally sound, as you might recall the television show was set in Chicago.[YouTube]Read more Chicago Cubs news on BleacherReport.com
For almost four years now, there has been absolutely no shortage of hype.
Ever since Theo Epstein agreed to turn around the Chicago Cubs to the tune of $18.5 million for five years, the North Side faithful—and beyond—have salivated for the season when the new president of baseball operations would make good. In Epstein's fourth season running the show, the hype is now developing into substance.
Epstein, along with general manager Jed Hoyer and the Ricketts family's deep pockets, has used the draft (Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber), the domestic and international free-agent markets (Jon Lester and Jorge Soler) and shrewd trades ...
The Chicago Cubs completed a critical four-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants on Sunday afternoon, but baseball took a backseat in the game's aftermath.
According to Giants beat reporter Andrew Baggarly, there was a bomb threat at Wrigley Field following the contest. He provided more context with a quote from a police officer and described the scene:
Carrie Muskat of MLB.com and John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle shared pictures of the police presence around the iconic stadium, while Paul Skrbina of the Chicago Tribune passed along the reason the press was asked to leave the building:
Fortunately, the ...
The Chicago Cubs have found an answer for their pitching needs, acquiring right-hander Dan Haren from the Miami Marlins on Friday.
Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald first reported Haren was being traded to Chicago. The Cubs later confirmed the move.
Spencer added the Marlins will receive minor leaguers Elliott Soto and Ivan Pineyro in the deal.
Soto is a 25-year-old shortstop in Double-A, hitting .275/.388/.314. Pineyro is a 23-year-old right-handed pitcher also in Double-A with a 3.69 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 107.1 innings.
The Cubs have been in the market for pitching leading up to the trade deadline. They had been connected to front-line ...
