Chicago Cubs’ Jason Hammel Compares Wrigley Field’s Construction to Baghdad

April 2, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

Wrigley Field is undergoing major construction this offseason, and it's taking much longer than expected. In fact, the Chicago Cubs considered playing their home games at Milwaukee's Miller Park. Cubs pitcher Jason Hammel was asked about the construction and compared it to Iraq's capital, according to the Chicago Sun-Times: "It looks like Baghdad. But you know there's a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow there. I'm excited, man." -Update:  Hammel took to Twitter to apologize for the comment. -End of Update They'll play the opener Sunday versus the St. Louis Cardinals without bleachers, but those are expected to be in place by midseason. Still, ...

It’s No Joke: The New-Look Cubs Are Ready to Win and Win Big in 2015

MESA, Arizona — These are the New Cubs: A funky, brilliant manager concerned between spring drills with the "dining experience" at his new restaurant. An MVP-candidate first baseman whose bold prediction of a division title reverberated throughout the spring. A Rookie of the Year candidate who... You want the Rookie of the Year candidate third baseman who bludgeoned Cactus League pitching this spring as if he is the second coming of Babe Ruth? Hello, Kris Bryant. Or the Rookie of the Year candidate outfielder from Cuba with the thoroughbred body who reminds the new manager of Vladimir Guerrero? Hello, Jorge Soler. Or perhaps a ...

Kris Bryant Roster Cut Is an MLB Problem, Not a Cubs Problem

March 30, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

Kris Bryant, arguably the best prospect in baseball and inarguably the crusher of more home runs than any other player this spring training, will start the 2015 season in the minor league. But don't blame the Chicago Cubs—blame Major League Baseball. After all, it's the rules that made this decision entirely inevitable and anything but surprising. The Cubs announced Monday they had sent Bryant to minor league camp despite his ridiculous .425/.477/1.175 triple-slash line and, count 'em, nine homers. Bryant could have batted 1.000 and hit a home run every time up, and still, the 23-year-old righty slugger would have begun the regular season in Iowa instead ...

5 Reasons to Be Excited for the 2015 Cubs Season

March 29, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

Even though the 2015 Chicago Cubs baseball season is just a week away, the hot topic of discussion lately has not been the state of the team; rather, it has been the fate of the historic Wrigley Field. Chairman Tom Ricketts has already announced that the ballpark will not be ready for Opening Day, and renovations could take an extra year to complete. Look on the bright side, Cubs fans. Wouldn't you prefer an extra year of construction for the ballpark instead of the reconstruction of the team? There are mixed expectations for the 2015 Cubs, though the reality is that the success of the team depends largely ...

Cubs Say Wrigley Field Renovations Will Take Extra Year to Complete

March 26, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

In the latest bit of bad news in what's increasingly become a nightmare renovation, Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts said construction on Wrigley Field will take at least one more year than initially expected.   “There will be four more years,” Ricketts said Wednesday, per David Just of the Chicago Sun-Times. “The way we project it now is four more years of construction.” The initial phase of construction, bleacher reconstruction, has been fraught with delays that will leave many fans displaced once the regular season begins. Chris De Luca of the Sun-Times showed a photo that depicted the disappointing state of Wrigley's right field bleachers with ...

Do the 2015 Cubs Have the Pitching Needed to Make Good on the Hype?

March 26, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

Let's do something other than talk about the Chicago Cubs offense. We've talked enough about that, though not without good reason. The Cubs offense looms large in discussions about why they're destined to contend in 2015, as surely any lineup with Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Jorge Soler, Starlin Castro, Miguel Montero and Dexter Fowler is going to mash. So instead, let's talk about the Cubs' pitching. We were doing that a lot around when they dropped $175 million on Jon Lester and Jason Hammel in December, but not as much since. In general, the attitude about Chicago's pitching has been along the lines ...

Edwin Jackson Went to Wrong Stadium Before Getting Lit Up by Oakland A’s

March 25, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

The Oakland Athletics mauled Edwin Jackson on Tuesday. The Chicago Cubs righty took the mound in the second inning and was immediately ravaged to the tune of nine hits and eight runs scored over the course of 1.2 innings. Jackson essentially served as batting practice for Oakland, and perhaps fittingly, he admitted his disastrous performance occurred after a morning spent driving around trying to find the stadium. CSN Chicago’s Patrick Mooney reports that the 31-year-old pitcher showed up late for the Cubs’ spring training tilt against Oakland after driving to the wrong venue. According to Mooney, Jackson turned to Google Maps for guidance ...
